They’re hard at work lifting their new album into the annals of infinite culture, New Jersey’s The Melancholy Kings show no mercy with this fourth single release from Her Favourite Disguise. The sophomore LP from the regents of wretched feelings, its opus is expanded and strengthened with their latest film-noire style music video. Visuals and motives from the Golden Age of Cinema, the choreography tells a story all its own. Can we feel love for a black and white long passed illusion? Something about the human mind allows it, and something about this band makes the concept even more fascinating. If you’re into artists like Television, Wilco, The Replacements, and Teenage Fanclub, then this will open your horizons. Otherwise, it’s a brand-new door to walk through. Watch and see.

Silken estrangement opens the piece and gives rise to a delicate acoustic, pushing the chords in little rhythmic notions of deciphered melody. The vocals join in, folk and rock n roll in one, the Bert Jansch style writing leans into Simon and Garfunkel, clearly giving the days of old and the years that followed which gave us a personal story. The feeling of loving someone intangible and overtly stylised leaves us feeling full but empty, complete yet false; the emotions are real even if the imagination is not. It’s always nice to wander down the lanes of daydream with people we wish we could spend time with, and this piece reminds us to never stop believing.
