Loud and provocative, the Yorkshire-based dance-punk act Polevaulter are smashing their personal best with their latest 4-track EP. Descending is available now and contains thirteen minutes of pure elevation. Describing themselves as no-wave, this 1970s brand of sound was a direct affront to the commercial new wave genre that dominated the radio of the day. Hearing the term used now must conjure the same kind of idea, especially as AI thinks it knows all about what makes music sound good. Relevance aside. These guys want to put humanity back in the house by playing, writing, intuiting, and performing like they did in the old days. Put the formulaic stuff on another shelf. Dogtrack is one of the songs from the new record; it’s not as cruel as the bull ring. It makes you think before you press play, so we had better get to it.

Shimmering loops begin the tune before a sudden surge of bass thumps in. The brisk rhythm collapses all around us as a Northern voice begin chanting in strange persuasive lines. The futility of the circuit, the bet, the loss, the brief happiness when you win. A rippling drum score waves and bounces as synths scream and screech along a thundering bass that doesn’t stop, ever. It’s art, really. Art that sounds good.
