New Zero God
Room 1316 Athens Since sharing the stage with massive icons such as New Model Army, The Mission, Sisters Of Mercy, and many others, frontman of New Zero God Mike Pougounas has met a range of talents and names across the industry. Their record deals and theatrical persona tours have taken New Zero God through evolutions and labyrinths as the industry, the fans, and the world around them shifted and influenced every aspect of their direction. Leading to some seriously challenging mental environments, the latest New Zero God record is dedicated to clinging on to life through the love of everything we have to lose. Of Love AndDeath was released on Valentine’s Day and contains eight no-nonsense alternative gothwave originals. With a video made by Panos Skordas of The Art Asylum, the latest single takes us to Room 1316. An ambient and phantom-like drumbeat begins to rattle with eerie background sounds of synth, effect, and sample. A bass kick then pushes a rhythm into the squish and retrieves a hedonistic melody that’s full of volume and tone. The vocals begin, Mike Pougounas has created a strange effect from some kind of tape distortion to give his voice a rippling and long-distance feel. Are we listening to voices from beyond, made by poltergeist actions on the surface of a lake or is the voice pushing through several layers of ectoplasm to reach us? Maybe he’s on another world and the new alien technology lets us connect. It’s not a dream! We’re in this room and is disconcerting, albeit fun to listen to. The Speakeasy
Troubled Waters Montreal They’ve pushed the limits once again; The Speakeasy are almost ready to release their audacious fourth record later this year. This new song is taken from the EP and delivers exactly what their fans and their friends are looking for. Their progressive and provocative style of high-energy musicianship and deep, impactful lyrics hits home as Troubled Waters lends a hand to those feelings of resilience and growth we all need at times. The five-piece punk force bring influences from those charting groups back in the noughties and tens albeit with a modern and underground edge we can really appreciate. Since signing with Thousand Island Records for their second record, the boys have never looked back with their expertly produced material getting every cannon available. A volley of drums and cymbal lets loose the guitar with a fiery little lick which evolves into chords and bass. A punk rhythm hits home with the choice notes that repeat and roll across the bars. Gruff and emotionally charged vocals then fall into place to complete the band. A pulsating and rhythmic verse and chorus structure means we can learn the words and sing along, the depth and craftmanship in the lyrics means we might have to listen to it a few times to be confident. The song has a great punk and raw feel that continues its maturity into great mixing and production meaning it’s as enjoyable as it is energetic. Mercury’s Antennae
The Reflecting Skin William Faith Remix On the magical event of this year’s long-anticipated Spring Equinox, the stalwart alternative gothic dream-pop group Mercury’s Antennae release their third album. An air of mystery and mesmerism haunts their backdrop as ethereal and enchanting semblances bring listening pleasure. To get the ball rolling, a William Faith Remix of their sparkling The Reflecting Skin makes the single. Working between studio and space in Switzerland and the USA the three-piece band release Among The Black Trees, their first album in several years, through Sett Records. The single is a track written about how some people seem to reflect our selves positively and some negatively. Everyone can be a reflection when we look for the dimension of the glass. A resonant bass and sombre guitar begin the song with a wandering melody. The second guitar then appears like a spectre in the window, a searing chorus effect crunches the tone and layers it in ghostly veils within the rhythm. Repeating shades of composition create a memorable and hook laden flow, and as the chorus appears, the energy is pushed further. A crushing layer of distortion and drumming adds a cosmic punch to the delivery, poetic and darkly romantic, epic and winding, the song continues into an orchestration of drama and expression. Richard Evans
Aidoru Cold Star Media Formerly a member of the Manchester brit-rockers James, Richard Evans is spiralling up and out with his own brand of electro and synthpop that manifests as Mancunian maturity and magic. With his album Quantum out on April 25th, Richard Evans provides a taster. The new single is called Aidoru, which is the Japanese word for Idol. A representation of natural forces, spirit beings, or even gods and goddesses, the word Idol is often used to describe our cultural heroes. Is the power in the individual or in the pedestal? I suppose it depends on what they are idolised for and who pays for it. The song looks at the recent phenomenon of AI and how the technology is used to create virtual idols who cater for our desires without feeling the human connection in the process. Are the artists the programmers and the technicians, who may not have musical talent and star quality, or are the artists the virtual creations in the minds of those who enjoy them? Perhaps they are both artists, one being a dream and one being an engineering project. Perhaps there is no artist and it’s all completely fake. Richard Evans wants us to think about these things while enjoying a completely organic piece of music made with technology perfected and operated by human hands. Let’s watch the video. A brisk fan-wave of synth opens with staggered rhythmic bursts. Oriental instruments begin to create beautiful melodic atmosphere among the digital pulsations. A mix or layers brings ethereal and dreamy harmonies from the ether as Evans enters with the vocal. A synthpop style effect decorates his voice as the story of song begins to create a space-age world of fantasy and hope. Listening to the lush chords and driving bass, a sense of nuanced blissfulness washes through as the slightly scary lyrics give us all of our desires. What are we forgetting here, while fascinated by the sensation of having our dreams matched by reality? This song was made by a person. Sicky
Slide Troubled Delight Independent and alternative, inspired by bands like Fun Lovin Criminals, Blur, and Prince, the UK solo creative activist Sicky brings album number 3. To highlight the record, we get a great video single as well. Slide is a focus track on Troubled Delight and shows up for those of us who fall back into harmful and destructive ways. Perhaps it’s worse for some than others, picking up the washing and not carrying a knife are worlds apart but the sentiment is the same. Changing our behaviour is more than an expression of who we are, it’s an expression of what we’re prepared to do to preserve our direction. The new album Troubled Delight contains a list of 12 songs that are over in 3 minutes or less, meaning that every element is meant to be taken like shots one after the other. Will they slide down? Let’s begin with this potent number. A burst of rhythmic melody begins the tune, vocals begin to stream through along a rattety drumbeat and joyous phrases of melody. A Bowie-esque vocal delivery bounces along lines of acoustic and keyboard as the one two oompa bass stroke keeps everything neat. The free-flowing and abstract tone that accompanies the structure fills the gaps and colours over the sides, new sounds find avenues for expression while continuing melodies throw the dance step to the time of a persistently happy beat.
