Dawn Of Ashes
Viral Decay Metropolis Records Aggressive, industrial, experimental, and dark, the new Dawn Of Ashes single is now available, and the new album comes out next month. Taken from the 20th of March release Anatomy Of Suffering is the stand-out track Viral Decay. It focuses on the core elements of the band’s sound by bringing the energy and the tone to your system today. Synthesisers and angry feelings, Dawn Of Ashes take a retrograde take on the modern condition with their brutal and mean-spirited originality. With subject matter like suicide, burnout, despair, and psychological abuse, it’s not something to put on for your children. More like what you’d listen to if someone just started a war. The track opens with sounds of horrendous things, not quite in earshot. Then a surging and sudden synth opens up the flow. It staggered forward with a gated attack, and more layers provide extra fire to the mixture. The bass and drums enter simultaneously, the darkwave industrial thrust of tension and gloom drives on. Vocals with a sinister, gravelly, and leaning on the black metal timbre then complete the sound. The track punctuated the atmosphere with a chopping and sliding formation of harmonising chord structures across various synth tones and rhythmic patterns. It’s difficult to hear the words, as is the style, which in a way protects the unwary listener from the grimoire of imagery the lyrics describe. Gina Zo
Dirty Habits (Miner Street Sessions) L.A. She’s collaborated with Grammy-winners Tim Sonnefeld, for work with Usher, and Justin Miller, who worked with Zach Bryan and Jazmine Sullivan. The breezy, no-nonsense Los Angeles singer and performer Gina Zo has found herself in the fast lane with a succession of hit songs that have each built her fanbase and pool of admirers. Raised in Philadelphia, she quickly discovered a love for music and storytelling. When she moved to LA, the pieces started to fit together, and her journey truly began. She’s just released a new 14 track album, Burn Me Into Something Better. It contains all her recent singles plus a bunch of originals that provide ample entertainment and food for thought. Audiences love her raw and uncompromising energy, and this translates directly into her studio versions. From her Miner Street Session, this is Dirty Habits. A swish of chunky acoustic soars out from the facia and Gina Zo enters with her vocal. There’s a No Doubt feel about her delivery, American and classy, the voice swivels on the notes like an ice-dancing acrobat and the energy rises with each line, each passing bar. A deliberately upbeat rhythm keeps the pace as introspective and deeply revealing lyrics portray a life in a world we can all feel a part of. Classic rock n roll, Cheryl Crow and Shania Twain kind of stuff that makes your spine tingle just a little. Keep up the party, sing a long in the car, make your day a brighter one with Dirty Habits. Wishing Well United States Another spell is cast, the date was Friday the 13th, and from then nothing was quite the same again. Magic Wands, the LA dream gaze duo comprised of Dexy and Chris Valentine, enlightened us all with their latest single, Wishing Well. The rhythms and hypnotic guitar effects blend the mind with imagination and dream; a deliberate journey awaits. The single is a prelude to their April EP of the same name, expanding the theme and delivering yet more encapsulating and engaging compositions. Poignant lyricism and polymathematical sound design, the spirits align, and the stars come out to shine with Magic Wands. A retro drum score begins the track as waves of fizzing bass and guitar radiate from within. Haunting feminine vocals then begin to dictate, melodious and vibrant, and the guitars begin to evolve. Chords and licks merge against the thrust of the electronic drums, a post-punk groove meets dreamy and spiralling feels. If it wasn’t so upbeat it would be gothic, however an enchanted and awestruck decoration in the production completely changes the atmosphere. It’s like being very small and walking around a glittered tube. Maybe it’s just me. Eugene McGuinness
Icarus Liverpool He did it all, wrote some great songs, got pretty big, had the record deal, and life was good. The dream was realised, or was it? Tenure in the arts is notoriously scarce, and for Eugene McGuinness, when the deal came to an end, so did the rocket ride. He went indie, made a record, became a dad, and then settled for a new life as a former musician. I think the saying is “you can’t keep a good man down”, and it certainly was true for Eugene. He just needed a break, who can blame him? Achieving so much naturally spends all kinds of fuel. Recorded at the Docklands in Liverpool, Eugene McGuinness Versus The Universe will be released at the end of April. He’s peeling doors on the record like a miniature advent calendar, and today’s window is Icarus. We all know the story, we all probably felt like him once or twice, whether it’s temporary or fatal. We’re not immortal, but we’re not quitters either, right? Put on the song. A sombre guitar with undertones in harmony tumbles along and gives way for the vocal. Soft, well-spoken, and delicately executed notes begin to dance on the steely beat. The tempo of the lyrics rises, as the music brings out extra layers of vocal and intrigue. The story builds, the paragraphs get longer, and the picture grows. A moody chorus breaks free like dolphins curving over the tip of the waves, drumming and violin find a niche, and the song builds in musical intensity. Elements of Mercury Rev and The Doves meet a homely folk intuition that fizzes within the composition. Ian Cobiella
Trial By Fire Los Angeles There’s something Bolivian and Cuban going on with Ian Cobiella, his family heritage still resonates deeply with his life in steady LA. He’s been classically trained in music with the piano and brings his own culture along for the ride, resulting in a blend of expertly written folk and alternative sounding productions. As an artist, Ian Cobiella wants to sit with discomfort and allow difficult sensations to play their part, rather than seeking an excuse or a humorous angle, sometimes bordering on contrition or simply ruminating on past and future is nourishing and rewarding. His new single is Trial By Fire. He wrote it about the artist’s journey, when you have a choice to accept your fate and put your soul on the line or tiptoe around the scene making little waves here and there. Asking yourself the hard questions and judging yourself to a premium you’d only dreamed of before really is a Trial By Fire. Chiming radiance fills the air as movement and guitar progress the sound. A solid steel string guitar melody throbs with shiny brass and silver. Ian Cobiella sings, a voice full of charming character and folk timbre elevates the mood with poise and prose. The music shifts and chops like slowly moving water, guitar-led and filled with the sound of wholesome vocals. A feminine duet adds another layer as the production slips and crunches under the weight of worldly things. Drums find a place; they bump and rattle within the bars, ambiently evolving as the music draws itself to a close. You can follow Ian Cobiella on Instagram
Robin Ross And The Melodynes
Campfire On The Moon RPM Entertainment Indie rock with psychedelia and good vibes, Pennsylvania-based Robin Ross and the Melodynes present their second full-length album. Mind Space entered the realm of general reality on the 20th of February, and fans will be pleased to know it contains the previously featured Spill No Mo Wine plus the single Echo of Love. Both tracks span their repertoire wings and provide a fun and thoughtful momentum building jam, with the best ingredients. To mark the album release, Robin Ross and the Melodynes have made a video track for Campfire on the Moon. Also from the album, it’s another page from the tome that’s going to surprise and entertain all at once. The title conjures mechanical campfires with oxygen tanks and embers floating like fireflies, pass the picnic basket and put the video on. A thumping tom tom rhythm starts the groove as a bass and guitar throw in a rattling motion. Harmonising vocals then add a unique flavour, an American twang with a bluesy swagger, the words playfully explore poetic fantasy and meandering dreams. As the drums bash along with a vibrant and tribal edge, the band add new layers of flavour to the flow with keyboards, guitar frills, and extra vocals. A piece of music that sits in the background as well as it does on full volume, the easy-going attitude hits the up-beat energy of people enjoying what they do.
