Midniter
Sugar Man Charlotte Turning back the book of influence to the days of silver boots and back-combed black hair, the new Midniter number dons a retro feel. About the nature of consumerism and addiction, Sugar Man explores the dark side of getting what you want, whenever you want. Nic Pugh’s art moniker Midniter is a fresh take on the modern art world, finding ingredients from sounds that he’s enjoyed over the years, immersing them in his own creative philosophy, then extracting the combination, there are now three mind-bending productions to his name. This time, we may hear elements of Mark Bolan and T. Rex as we get sucked in to the realm of actualised desire. Heavy, powerful drumming pokes a huge hole in the intro and lets the feelings out. A sleek and steady pulse rummages in the low end with fuzzy, blissful distortion while a sultry vocal performance completes the picture. The lyrics begin to double up, harmonising with himself, Midniter takes us from poetic descriptions to funky expressiveness. The piece has so many dimensions, it’s got a steady beat yet the progression shifts from melody to melody with lots of emotional pivoting to help us adventure on. It’s morish, just like sugar, or is that social media, prejudice enforcing headlines, or just an exaggerated sense of power when going about your day? Veteran Canadian Pop Punk Group The Riptides Revisit Back Catalogue With Remastered Editions19/2/2026
The Riptides
Goodbye Hawaii Pirates Press Records Their phenomenal and critically acclaimed record Canadian Graffiti has recently been remastered and re-released. Not being happy with a finished product is a heavy feeling; we grow, we learn, we gain more personal agency, and we sometimes revisit the past. Doing it differently this time, The Riptides enlisted the support of Mass Giorgini. He’s done work with groups like Rise Against, Suzi Moon, and Alkali Trio. With loads of experience in the pop-punk field, both front and back of house, I assume his name wasn’t even put into a hat for selection. They’re about to do a slim weekend tour, too, to promote the latest version of the album. The two singles from the record are Goodbye Hawaii, today’s feature, plus the memorable punk-duet Someone Just Like You featuring Biff Naked. Both keynote tracks crack open the door to their opus just a little, and let the light out to guide you in. Fun and upbeat bounce chords bring on the pop-punk energy as summertime Beachboys style harmonies frame the mood. The band have just been to Hawaii, and they have to go home. What a shame, they don’t want to go. A love song with attitude, the punchy power chords and choppy lyricism feels like a campfire and barbeque stereo track, unless it’s being played live at the grand stage on the seafront. It’s got memorable and catchy words, they repeat several times with the chorus and the verse, the fast-paced and high energy surge leaves us wanting to visit the Island State ourselves. Kathryn Grimm
Goodbye To The Blues Portland Originally from Group Therapy, who collaborated with Jeff Buckley and Michael Bolton, the guitar slaying rock n roll heart-throb Kathryn Grimm sets out with her fast-growing solo career. Already praised by The LA Times, Al Hendrix, and Billy Hulting, the presence and talent she brings to her shows is like a tsunami of quality. There is seemingly no end to her abilities to get music out there, apart from her solo work, there’s also the Kathryn Grimm Band, The Jazz Rockets, Hippie Love Slave, and Babes In Portland. She also writes music for others, most notably her music features heavily in the award-winning theatre production Homeless: The Musical. Holstering her university degree in Jazz and Commercial Music, and picking up her electric guitar, Kathryn Grimm shows how being in love can banish the blues forever. A chewy bassline begins the piece as the guitar begins to chuck out the chords. They tremble and vibrate in the pause before the music stats proper. The drums kick in, rising beats curdle and coil around a choppy and melodic chord progression. Blues notes with a major key, the song launches into a classic rock and slightly country style jamboree. Kathryn Grimm sings like a star, her voice projects across the slosh of music in easily heard sections, the words are clear, and her voice expresses all the feelings we can appreciate. A great range and a deliciously competent guitar technique, the song is fun and lively, with a welcome mat out in rock clubs and the pop music venue too. They Might Be Giants
Wu Tang Brooklyn The famous New York district of Brooklyn is made even more relevant by the continual premium output of They Might Be Giants. Surely in past tense by now, the huge geek rocker group are really drawing out the moment by making us wait until April. The 18-track record The World Is To Dig will be on all the streaming sites and available from their shop. The Sword Style Shaolin Kung Fu art form associated with the Wudang Temple, westernised to Wu Tang, not only inspired the classic rap group, but it has also brought about a whole new ethos of flashy, snappy, slashy, lyrical styles. Taking this cutting philosophy to their own kind of sound, They Might Be Giants present their latest single. Half in celebration of the phenomenal rap group and half in the art of martial lyricism themselves, their Wu Tang throws a whole new light on the subject. A climbing guitar melody strums out before the classic vocals begin. The music bops into a fast and choppy manoeuvre that gives the vocal a mattress to bounce on. A slight distortion lends the guitar a punky sense of vibrancy that hits quick-stepping melodic progressions. The vocal is a kind of love song to the hip hop icons, it adopts the poke and jab, with parry and stride, as the words fly out in melodic and structured motions like Kata in Karate. Their black belt performance and memorable exhibition makes sure that we’ve got plenty to enjoy for the next seven weeks. Then, The World Is To Dig. Nian Tong
What’s On Your Mind London Independently minded and full of his own kind of talent, the intelligent pop singer songwriter Nian Tong opens his year with What’s On Your Mind. About being ghosted, something social media has amplified over the years, sometimes people stop talking to us and won’t tell us why. They claim not to dislike us but whenever the opportunity to show the contrary is presented, they turn it down. He worked his way up to the front of the stage; his background is in showbusiness from behind the scenes. Working with huge Chinese names like Kenji Wu, ICE, and Karencic, Nian Tong learned not only how the show is put together but how to behave like the ones who do the magic. Don’t be irritable, and be happy to see everyone, always. It’s easier said than done when they just give blank stares and shuffle their feet. Nian wrote the track when he first moved to London in 2023. A long-distance love was brewing, but when push came to shove, there were only wisps of smoke. C’est la vie, it takes a special kind of soul to find safe companionship with talented, creative, and culturally brave individuals. Let’s put the stylus on the groove and push this circle round. The music starts with a funky piano pulse, tonal chords on the treble notes bump along with a big-band style of drumming, slosh and kick frame the energy. Nian sings like a stage star; we can feel him strutting along in a colourful suit and hat, singing to props as if they were genuine. Upbeat, gentle, and fun melodies keep the pace as the memorable words keep coming back to remind us how to join in. There is a subtle jazz and funk in the style, muted by the upbeat and jolly sense of major key and fun dashes of emotion. The musicianship is fantastic, the voice is uniquely brilliant, and the song feels like we’ve always known it. You can follow Nian Tong on Instagram
One Leg One Eye
Glistening, She Emerges Ireland The mysterious and generative side-project of Lankum’s Ian Lynch, the experimental folk edge takes a turn into the shadows. Finding a niche that feels right somewhere pressed between noise and drone with black metal and folk, One Leg One Eye set sail in 2026 with a 4th pressing of their sought-after album and tour supporting the colossus that is God Speed! You Black Emperor. And Take The Black Worm With Me is the record and it contains all the singles including Glistening, She Emerges and Only The Diceys. Together with live member George Brennan, Ian Lynch takes his inventive and artistically infused sound to new levels of awesome. You really shouldn’t miss out on this interesting and intelligent sound. The music begins with tranquillity, the peace and quiet calms the mind before the oncoming creation. Ambient tones then glow in the distance, together they climb the horizon and move inward towards us. A strange discordance meets grace and nature as the mixture of frequencies shifts and laps over one another. Infinity can be heard howling in the amalgam while the pressure of closing sound brings awareness. A lunge of bass then opens a gate where a deeply spiritual groaning hypnotism breaks free and rolls out the runway for the bringing glory. Entranced, we sit or stand in utter awe as the ocean of emotional representations washes over our audiosphere. Follow One Leg One Eye on Instagram 2026 EUROPEAN TOUR WITH GODSPEED YOU!
