Party Punks Druglords Of The Avenues Score Big With Their Third Full Length Record Gotta Light26/3/2026
Druglords of the Avenues
Gutter Roller Mart Pirates Press Records Released this week, on the 20th of May, the third Druglords of the Avenues LP dropped to the sound of bong bubbles and Zippos. Gotta Light features the two radio singles Ghetto Sidewalks and Gutter Roller Mart, which is today’s feature. The ten-track record presents itself as lengthy, yet when we look a little deeper, many tracks are less than two minutes long. That’s intriguing enough, like drive-by darts, they roll out of the player like coins from an activated slot machine. The band began its life as an experimental divergence for punk vocalist Johnny “Peebucks” Bonnel, from the bands Swingin’ Utters, Filthy Thieving Bastards, and Primitive Heads. Now with three albums, it’s more of a second job. They settle like bitter in an inventive corner somewhere between the billboards of The Pogues and The Pixies then vandalise it by throwing a bit of Circle Jerks style hardcore into the bowl. For fans and collectors, there’s a limited picture disc out there so watch for the link at the end. It doesn’t have an intro; the song bangs into being with immediate explosivity. The guitars and drums hammer out an extremely fast and technically masterful romp through distortion, treble tone, and palm-muted chops. The vocals yell, yammer, and yellow, along the measured bars of high energy masculine brouhaha that rampages and never repents. Punk at its intensive best. Octavian Winters
Elements of Air San Francisco The North American dark and post-punk scene is thriving thanks to the tight and well-crafted numbers continually offered by Octavian Winters. Fronted by Ria Aursjoen, the band ensorcel the scene with mystery and theatrical punch. Blending the voltage of rock music with the allure of gothic, they continue to pursue the deepest vaults of passion and melody. They’re preparing to go on tour with Pink Turns Blue, the German post-punk and darkwave outfit, with several US dates already confirmed. Produced by William Faith, a well-known name in the field, Elements of Air from Octavian Winters explores how our belief systems and views on the world limit what we feel and experience. A sudden snap of snare and kick releases the energy. It’s adorned by a hot electric guitar that’s glowing white with kinesis as the chords and melody cloak the percussion. Bass and vocal take either end of the scale and throw the smoke bombs and purple flares down to create the atmospheric scene. A grime in the mix keeps a muddy field sensation alive as the sharp end of the music slices through and gives us a clear path to walk. Some of us scrape like zombies, imitating their dance moves, others march and prance like freshly fed vampires returning to their libraries. A soaring burst of vocal carries the music out, it lets us feel alive while the earth is thrown down in handfuls on our wide-open eyes. Can you move? The music is so transfixing. Wooden Overcoat
Home Portland It’s the debut single for Portland’s Wooden Overcoat, and the moment has never been better for a fresh perspective on the psychedelic pop music sound. As our perceptions are tested daily with varying stories from varying locations, sometimes we need to stay at home. Even then, can we escape the divergent reality that permeates the turning of the days? The track effortlessly blends a range of 60s and 90s nostalgia with an ultra-modern standpoint. It’s been a long time in the works. Created during 2020, Home is featured on the forthcoming EP, Hello Sunbeam. It’s not out yet, so this first single is literally page one for this hard-working band. The single is put to video by the in-demand Francesca Bonci, the critically acclaimed visual artist and director. Known for her otherworldly theatrical visual style, it’s an unmissable act twice over. An epic an cavernous solitary guitar opens out, it sounds almost country and western, bringing images of horses and riders on open desert roads. A smooth transition then builds the motif into a flowing progression of chords and lead; the notes twinkle and glisten as drips of echo and reverb rebound against the flow of notes. A dreamy vocal completes the circuit; the light switches on and begins to rotate as the verses lap over the breakers of beat and far-flung transposition. A background sound offers ever present nuance to the music, sometimes it’s like crumbling distortion, sometimes, the wind in the fields, and others a panpipe echoing from times past. It’s a magical number that’s inspiring and enchanting. You can get music by Wooden Overcoat on Bandcamp Follow Wooden Overcoat on Facebook and Instagram
Louise Aubrie
Midnight Calls Carrot Bone Records She grew up in London and found that music brought her to life. Then Louise Aubrie took her passion to fascinating heights with a classic indie rock sound. She’s recorded at Abbey Road, imagine walking through those doors and feeling the room. She’s also done a stint at Hollywood’s East West Studio, where so many more classics and millionaire records have been made. Louise Aubrie has performed at some truly aspirational venues in London, New York, and L.A., and there’s nothing that can get in the way of her capable fire. The 6th album is out, called LFA, with Midnight Calls being highlighted today. The record was written and recorded in L.A., where Louise spends a lot of her time. It explores her loving relationship between London and Hollywood – two of the world’s most culturally powerful geographies. Most of us know what it’s like to be torn between places, concepts, or directions. Finding the middle ground can make a parallel walk, keeping the horizon in front of you. A Hendrix style guitar tone wails out as drums crash and bash in a foray of percussion. It romps over the rumble for a bar or two then hits the beat. Harmonies and vocals pin the sound down. A greasy bar feel meets down to Earth bedroom sing a long stuff, it hits home and takes you out at the same time. The vocals feel like a subtle punk vibe, and it’s balanced by the pitch perfect elocution and retro sounding harmonies, reminiscent of West Coast big band songs. The band genuinely thrust a quality that deftly puts Louise Aubrie on a platform all of her own, where she can strut and sing and make her music alive with a casual command. Sunsparks and Freya Alley
Good Enough For Now London A joyous and monumental collaboration between two of London’s most vibrant scene artists, Good Enough For Now is the completely modest title of the latest Sunsparks track. Featuring the Lithuanian leading lady Freya Alley, her almost eldritch mystique and beguiling electronica meets upbeat and rhythm-based synth and dance. Sunsparks always deliver a technically elevated and simultaneously streetwise sound. Freya Alley recently competed in the nationals for the Lithuanian Eurovision for the second time in a row. Living in London for a decade or more, she’s fashioned a consistently powerful style with hundreds of thousands of streams to date. I wonder what they mean with Good Enough For Now, surely, they don’t mean themselves? Listen and see. The vocal hits synth lushness with vibrant multi-tonal orchestration. The cryptic instruments resemble piano with metallic elements. The vocals lace the rhythm in repeating charms of delicately posed lyricism. An evocative breakdown then unleashes a bass rhythm and digital spirals. The melody comes back, like sunshine emerging from behind a golden cloud, the silver and the platinum radiating from the misty horizon. A progressive journey takes the music from corner to corner, exploring aspects of the structure in doses of artistic composition. The lyrics find niches throughout to vibrate and loop, sampled sections of voice echo in the distance to close. Shape Navigator
Norham Sunrise Coastal Electronauts Taken from his multi-faceted album Journal, the latest Shape Navigator video explores the sonic sculpture and sound trajectories developed by artists such as Warrington Runcorn New Town Development Plan and Craven Faults. Technical and introspective, the genre leans towards philosophy through audibility rather than groove and rhythm. Norham Sunrise was made by collecting various found recordings collected around the Northumberland coast. Like J.M.W. Turner, Shape Navigator was inspired by the brilliance and vivacity of the mixtures of sun, water, and sky, where the universe meets itself at a crossroads of natural beauty. With a video made by @diz_qo, it’s as unusual as it is unmissable, especially for eclectic electric fans. Tapping echoes and crackling static coalesce with a drone high end that carries into beeps. A layer of thick and insisting bass then moves gently underneath, pushing the particular descriptors like glacial regolith. Viper-like strikes of drum beat repeatedly at the sides of a shrinking box while ambient and mysterious cosmic whistles and strings glide through shapes made from momentary dream. A burst of harmony carries the piece forward once more, as the melody begins to dominate the surge of kinesis, an orchestral flow creates a bubble of imagination to sit within, entranced and focused.
