Michael J. Sheehy & the Hired Mourners
Don’t We Deserve Some Kind Of Love Dimple Discs Taken from the forthcoming album of the same name, Don’t We Deserve Some Kind Of Love? gets a radio edit for the popular airwaves. Thank goodness for talent like Michael J. Sheehy & The Hired Mourners who offer consistent quality and introspective ambrosia for proper listeners. Known worldwide as the vocalist from the 90s band Dream City Film Club, and the power behind Miraculous Mule, Michael J. Sheehy is also no stranger to hearing his compositions on TV. The film Intimacy and the series Deadwood both made use of his sounds. A shorter version of the 6-minute title track, Don’t We Deserve Some Kind Of Love? is the 3rd single from this first album release in 6 years. Out on June 19th via Dimple Discs, there will be a fantastic release show featuring The Water Rats on the 7th. Learn the words before anyone else and get your ears on this new single. An intimate studio dynamic reveals the master behind the work, then the piano begins. A moody, melancholy, and tranquil melody unwraps like presents. Within the folds of tone is a gorgeous voice. A baritone style brushes gently over the riverside-like notes with sudden emotion and dreamy endlessness. A sombre chorus lets the feeling out of the bottle like a genie, love is everything and nothing at once, a colour that frames our view. Where is the crayon? It can’t be bought, only found. The colour of the music takes a blue and red tinge, passion and sadness revel in their curious relationship until the sun takes the shade away. It’s gold. You can follow Michael J. Trauma Party
Speak To Me Auckland Rising fast, the post-punk garage outfit from New Zealand have opened for the legendary Lung, another NZ export. They also supported Guitar Wolf, Schkeuditzer Kreuz, and The Jackets. Their tight and solid sound never fails to enshrine an evening with something to remember. Last April was when they released their debut EP, Because You’ve Been Good, and the record spells out their musical manifesto in crystal clear abstraction. The band have made a great video to go with their track Speak To Me. Previously only available as an audio, this new multimedia production is about social isolation and what they call ideological drift. Loneliness and vulnerability can cause people to find companionship in the fringes and that’s where extreme views can be sown. How do they address this fact of life? Let’s see. A roomy snare roll bashes out the groove as the band unravels their motions. Guitars bump in a surging push, like a march on double time; the bass and drums give out a one two beat that carries the vocal with rhythmic lines and rhyming couples. A western cowboy feel in the electric lead guitar whistles across the bars as if they were crags on an open road. A punchy, oi punk style vocal direction meets ska feels and upbeat riffs to make a fully rounded punk experience. Blindspot Maryland Songwriters of Washington open mic regulars will have a soft spot for Lynn Hollyfield, who hosts the event with a gracious heart. She’s also the music director at the Celebration Centre for Spiritual Living in Falls Church. A folk style that’s adorned with jazz and soul, Lynn Hollyfield has been enjoying the stage for years and is no stranger to songwriting and performance. This latest track is about losing someone to fentanyl, a dangerous painkiller that’s more addictive than morphine. It’s easy to judge and difficult to understand. That's why sometimes we need help from those with a knack for it. Blindspot is taken from her up and coming fourth album, produced by Seth Glier, Diving In was recorded in a reformatted New England Church while the snow glistened outside last December. Winner of awards, and a popular night out on her regular tours, we can’t miss Lynn Hollyfield or her Blindspot. An easy-going percussive rhythm ensues as the guitar glides across the stave, brush-stroke drumming gives it a heartbeat. Lynn Hollyfield starts her song, remembering the signs she missed and wondering if she could have done more. The metaphors and narratives ripple outward, finding places in our own lives that resonate too. People have blind spots and miss the obvious, then again, some people don’t want their hurts on show either. The guilt of losing someone to circumstance hangs deep, yet this pretty and laid-back song makes it easy to communicate and move forward. Joan sings with the theatrical style; the story and emotion build within the melody and rhythm. Choice words resonate deeply within our inner being as the male and female harmonies linger in our imagination. Lords Of Acid
Dream Boy Antwerp Heavy electronica and meaning where some put mere whimsy, Belgium’s Lords Of Acid follow up with their second single of the year. This time the band take us on a psychological ghost train through the lure of addiction, desperation, and desire to be wanted. The seductive magnetism of dangerous relationships, either with people, chemicals, or ideas about the self, the hormonal hug that they offer can become talons and claws. This isn’t a song about judgement, it’s an exploration of loneliness, hopelessness, and reckless abandon. Offering up a genuine high through sound and rhythm, Lords Of Acid not only dissect the human soul, they medicate it with wholesome and mind-bending professionalism. Play the video. A chunky electric guitar riff with electro drums begins the tune. It pops the atmosphere with vibrant pins as the fast-step beat pushes onward. The rhythm builds as shouting male vocals climb to the peak of the sound. It bursts with a rush of fill and then sweeps back down into a reggae style chorus. Female vocals offered by Carla Harvey lean in with a laid-back and sexy hypnotism. Siren-like tropical seduction, it hits us in the centre as the rampant rhythms continue to build behind their loch. All it takes is a little push, and away it goes. Overflow. You can follow Lords Of Acid on Facebook And Instagram Get music by Lords Of Acid on Bandcamp
UNTER STRØM
Orynth California With their debut single out for a week now, the ship has set sail and left the harbour. A duo based between L.A. and San Diego, UNTER STRØM start their story with Orynth on Renegade Records. Their electronic sound mixes melodic cinematica with heavy-duty industry, leaving a groove that spills with emotion, feeling, and intensity. The latest production from Alex Gonzales from Matte Blvck and John Kunkel of The New Division and John Grand, UNTER STRØM represents the fascinating front page of their long-term collaborative coalition. Recorded as part of a series of releases that all came to being during an impressive group of sessions, this debut is the exciting narrative that all else will follow. A wave of synth tones bashes and billows with vibrant frequencies, the layers build, merge, and form a continuous pulse. The dancing element breaks free as the drums slide in, ripping up the ground with stomping bass and whirly-gig tonal snares and cymbals. The synths rise, melody folds over itself in harmony, pace, and percussive scales. The mix of instrument sounds ranges from string like beams to crunching bubble bass, comb plucks, and steely tingles, they work together to form a dynamic and evocative dimension of sound. Exciting stuff. You can follow on UNTER STRØM Instagram |
