Lyra
Weird Club Ireland She really is something else, the devilishly intriguing Lyra is back with her new number. Weird Club throws down the gauntlet and draws the line in the sand. She puts herself on the side of the misfit and the true-to-life human who never seem to fit in. When society defines the borders of the box according to convenience, is it any wonder most of us seem a little odd? It must take a lot of effort to squeeze into one of those little unquestionable boxes people never judge. We are all here, on the other side of the graph paper, enjoying music like Weird Club and spreading the word. Finding the anthemic and evocative sound she was looking for, Lyra sought the help of Grammy-nominated Anna Krantz. Her work with Ed Sheeran, Geri Halliwell, and Mickey Guyton has always resulted in excellence. Having recently appeared on a TV show about adventure in South Africa with ex-Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Ray Goggins from special forces, fusing her newly found energy and influence into music is only going to make it more alive. It begins with a scattering of beats of vocal. Modern effects create a sculpture from Lyra’s voice as the synths and bass hit home. Huge rhythms then unravel as the vocal flows from the intro into the verse. A quick heartbeat style rhythm pulses along the bars as quick vocals and melodic soaring lines merge with dancing moves and merging influences. RnB, rock, hip-hop and more can all be felt in the flow as the mixing instruments add clever rhythms and vocal styles that overlap and coalesce into one another. Just like the weird crowd, everything feels unique yet manages to combine to make something as beautiful as the girl on the mic. Ecce Shnak
Craig’s List Jawn Nay! Yay! (live) Records, Man Records Taken from their Backroom Sessions EP, which cosies up with New York City quintet Ecce Shnak, Craig’s List Jawn Nay! Yay! Reveals new material to coincide with their upcoming tour. Playing alongside EMF and Spacehog, the artrock crowd on the West Coast will be treated to some seriously seductive and cerebral sound. The EP is a four-track snippet that also highlights performances of Jeremy. Utilitarian Sadboy (live), Prayer On Love (live), and Fight Song (live). The show was filmed for the band’s prominent YouTube channel, and the audio has been gifted to the listeners who just want the sounds. You can listen in your car. Perfected in the studio at New York’s Artroom by Jeff Lucci, mixed by Nicholas Vernhes, and mastered by Grammy-winner Joe LaPorta, enjoy this live moment captured for you. A rip of drums and distortion opens the track before a Zappa-esque vocal hits with wavering harmonies. The pulsations of music change as the drumming shifts with subtle instrumental jibs. A manic tapestry of mosaic abstraction spills colours and angles in flowing pours that settle in newly found inkblots of rock n roll. With the downturn, the mellowness of the song lifts and reveals pretty tunes and poetic nursery rhyme style lines that hypnotise and soothe. A flow of sound then washes over and reminds us of the other side of this group. Loud and noisy, with a dash of insanity. Mayzie Belle
Beach Bum New York They have a fantastic slide guitar and power chord blend of punk that snugly fits on the roster of Punkerton Records. From Queens, New York, the three-piece new-comers Mayzie Belle have just put out their debut single Beach Bum. Proudly in Stereo, just like the old days, the cover depicts an old-fashioned car with a woman on the beach lounging in the sun, wearing a red bikini. The tone has been set, and the sound is about to be revealed, Beach Bum puts on a show for Summer 25. An original college band, Mayzie Belle began life doing covers and pulling in crowds with classic renditions. Realising that their own talents are worth exploring, the band have moved on and begun to write their own material. Beach Bum is the first official release, and there’s bound to be plenty more just over the horizon. The guitars bring out the music with a groovy bounce before the vocals begin. A Queen Adrena style projection of lyrics reaches the high notes with sauntering swagger and class. A funky element keeps the bass moving in time while the guitars lap over each other like waves caught in a harbour. The song moves up and down with pace and energy in movements that keep us guessing while entertaining all the while. A classic pop punk sound fuses with an imagination and dream that crumbles in as effect and sound production. Exciting, and the track just wants to be played one more time. Night Ritualz
Piensa En Mi San Antonio Exploding onto the Latin and electronic scene, the Texas based Night Ritualz recently released his self-titled album. Just three short months later, as the summer draws in, the free-thinking and artistic Vincent Guerrero IV reinforced the inherent value of Hispanic culture with his latest. This vintage cover version is a Spanish classic written in the 1930s, it translates into Think Of Me. Piensa En Mi is one of those classic numbers that people recognise and respect, made famous several times, so when it’s done it has to be done properly. Thank goodness Night Ritualz is a composer and producer with the experience and talent to pull it off. Blending the ethical framework of EDM, post-punk, and Latin influences, you’ll have to ask him what he brands his genre as yourself; I’d rather not print it. A retro-wave synth drum break oopens the music as lush vintage chord voices chime in a euphoric and nostalgic fashion. Bumping bass tones bounce with quick stages of infusion as the middle range is decorated by a fascinating ambience made of sparingly painted melody. The vocals wander in a dream; the emotions and passion can be felt even though the meaning is lost is translation. A poignant melody structure greets a party style rhythm that accompanies the emotive and heartwarming tones of the vocal. It’s easy to hear why this number is popular, and perhaps the time has come for an English speaking fanbase to grow. You can follow Night Ritualz on Instagram And TikTok
Jah Wobble
Tyson Dub Remix Dimple Discs The highly esteemed and sought-after ex-bassist of Public Image Ltd, Jah Wobble, is back with new solo material and on Dimple Discs for the first time. His name precedes him with sounds and influences spurring from his continual expression and output. Having worked with greats such as Pharoah Sanders, Sinead O'Connor, Ginger Baker, Bjork, Massive Attack, and more, his skillsets and experience bring sounds from the whole ethos. This latest track is a number from his Dub Volume 1, the new album which Jah Wobble wrote, recorded, and mixed the whole thing. It’s also got his own artwork to complete the package. No maverick deal, the mastering and final touches were applied by industry figurehead Anthony Chapman. A memorial track, Tyson Dub Remix is a dedication to Jah Wobble’s late canine companion. The trusted Staffordshire Bull Terrier has left an immeasurable impact on the whole family and writing this fetching and catchy piece was the least his best friend could do. Let’s listen. It begins with a blissed-out bass phrase that bends and warps along a dandy compression arc. Funky drums begin to churn the goodness as the groove digs down with desirable results. A steady plodding rhythm, like that of a staffie at rest, takes hold and drives the music onward. Strong and steady paces of rhythm push the sound through trumpet infusions and synthesiser bursts that echo in a modern style tape loop. Instrumental sounds continue to merge and coalesce as the progressive track marches on through breaking drums and thudding bass. A laid-back trip-hop element carries the track as the coat of dub colours flashes the goods with uplifting and buoyant harmonies and rhythmic melody. Rotersand
Private Firmament (I Fell For You) Trisol / Metropolis Records It’s not that long until we hit sweltering August, and all the fun that happens as the kids relax and the grown-ups do what they can to enjoy the sunshine. In Germany, where the synthesiser music scene is particularly prevalent August is the month to remember for the new Rotersand album, Don’t Become The Thing You Hated. Taken from the record, out just this week, is the new single Private Firmament (I Fell For You). Written about the nature of computerised networks and information gathering being binary, this or that, whereas human beings are a lot more complex and spectral in their ways. You can easily be forced into feeling completely one way or another thanks to the divergent information systems that guarantee our interest, and Rotersand want no more of it. It’s their first proper release since 2020, so synth and darkpop fans are all excited to give it a listen. Here it is. It opens with a frantic and insisting synth motif that makes you sit and listen. A quick rhythm paces the progress as the vocal hits with firing lines. Repeating lines and rhyming phrases swirl and coalesce before the bass hits with a bump. A party sense of pushing motivation takes hold as the vocals continue. It’s like KMFDM with the distorted spoken word yet the patterns make way for new sensations and poetic vibes. An upbeat sense of style penetrates a darkwave atmosphere to create a juxtaposition of leanings that take us in multiple directions. Expertly crafted electronica is difficult to find and easy to spot. Here it is. Find out more on the Rotersand website You can follow Rotersand on Facebook |
