We Are The People United States A call to arms, for holding each other up with, We Are The People is the new single from the award-winning and cultural figurehead Lynn Hollyfield. The Director of Music at The Celebration Centre for Spiritual Living in Falls Church, and a regular compere for the Songwriters of Washington open-mic sessions, Lynn is music through and through. She’s been writing her own breed of pretty American folk since her early years, so fully-fledged she enchants and invents with every new moment. Co-written with playwright and poet Carol Burbank, the song is a lively protest number aimed at bringing unity where tiny differences feel like peas under a dozen mattresses. Are we all so delicate and easily made uncomfortable, like the Princess? This is We Are The People. A buoyant guitar riff bounces out a cosy melodic rhythm, a sense of Janis Joplin fizzes in the chord choices. The band are not as formulaic as others might be, Scar Chamber enjoy changing things up each time and trying out new directions and musical emotion. Formed and founded by Babylon A.D. guitarist Ron Freschi, and long-term vocal collaborator Jeff Winslow, Scar Chamber always provide expertly crafted and beautifully delivered rock n roll. They take a provocative and emboldened approach to music, capturing grit and melting icy atmospheres by force. Smooth and swaggerish drumming begins the piece; a sultry sway gives rise to a melodic guitar. The notes twirl and flow; the progression leans over and winks before the electric injection. Sugarfree Criminal Records They’re back with a spectacular ten-track album called Interrupted. British rock n roll adventurers Argonaut have put it out on limited edition green vinyl, with only 100 available. Any left? Check the link at the end. Produced by The Kut, known for her glass-ceiling smashing antics in nearly every room, she also drummed on the record. Argonaut have two albums out already, their self-titled debut and TRY. Is it rugby or court? This third record leans on the 80s synth sound while giving the guitarists room to glide and gliss with ever more fuzzed out headspace. With their lead single Sugarfree hitting the mark, it’s not going to rot your teeth but it’s still full of taste. Hit it. A reverse drumming sample takes hold and the vocals hit like a brit-pop memory. A Leonard Cohen sense of style carries the voice through the phasing guitars, it’s unsettling and cautious, while intriguing and dark. There’s a sexiness to it, but it feels more like a dream or fantasy than a real romance. The smooth layers of rhythm throb and vibrate on the cowboy bass and grunge-punk drumming. A new energy folds into the cake as new guitars plunge in with the female harmony on the chorus. It culminates in power, fire, and a waterfall of distortion. You’re So Wired Pittsburgh After 25 years away, the post-punk duo Lowsunday re-emerged this year with two cracking EPs. There was a black one and a white one, with new material mixing with the old. Lowsunday Ghost Machine Black EP revisited some of their nostalgia with reworkings of a top selection of tracks. The White EP took the opposite approach and celebrates everything new from the band. Blending shoegaze with post-punk and new-wave, Lowsunday offer a riptide of powerful forces manifested through melody, harmony, and effects. From the new record, You’re So Wired is about those magnetic personalities who seem to live half in reality and half in a dream. Putting the fantastic back into our lives can be a blessing or a curse, from experience. Keep your feet on the ground and remember that they can’t see your story, just your actions. Treachery Chicago It’s pronounced Tatu Graal, and it’s the white-hot focal point of esoteric introspection, industrial, and synth heaven. Grounded in the archetypal psychology of James Hillman, and seeking hedonism aligned with illumination, the latest Tatv Gral single was mixed by William Faith of Christian Death at 13 Studio, in Chicago. The single stops the show just in time for the upcoming release of the EP of the same name. It’s got remixes from genre favourites including Chris Vrenna of Nine Inch Nails and Daniel Myer of Haujobb. The track was founded on ancient Hellenic astrology. According to the Ancient Greeks, both Saturn and Mars indicate treachery. Of course, they didn’t know about the planets beyond Saturn. Who decides the symbolic resonances of the new discoveries? That's what I want to know. The song Treachery by Tatv Gral explores the nature of a reality that contains not one but two baleful influences in our lives. A tubular bass synth bumps out the percussive rhythm before chiming blips and metallic digital taps hammer in more melodic rhythm. A whispering and melodious vocal then cusps the wave with a thrust of emotive clarity. The bass and drums then accentuate and add more power, the vocals becoming louder, more chanted, and eerie. With 6 LPs on the books already, and a fast-growing reputation for experimental awesomeness, AMP usher us into the world of retro gaming. Back in the day there was a great game called Pitfall. It came out in 1982 on the Atari, then on Commodore a little later. A jungle adventure game, with a timer, players were tasked with navigating over 200 screens in 20 minutes. With vine swinging and secret tunnels, the graphics were revolutionary for the day. Many people have a nostalgic fondness for these simpler times, plus the excitement and tension translates well into modern sentiments. Let’s play. A grinding guitar riff throttles out the rhythm. In Another Life New Jersey They’re working up a storm for their latest album, The Pendulum Swings. New Jersey-based Deardarkhead have been quiet over the past couple of decades, it’s their first full-length release in 26 years, with In Another Life as the second single from the future album. It follows from their highly acclaimed Letting Go, which recently broke the ice after all this time. Their name comes from a traditional poem called Cean Dubh Dilis by Irishman Samuel Ferguson. They’ve also shared stages and studios with serious modern talent, feeling right at home alongside people like Deborah Harry, Supergrass, Everclear, and The Psychedelic Furs. Their alt-rock sound is made more intriguing with the use of top-drawer melodic guitar and malleable atmosphere. As the clock strikes music and the chimes echo into memory, this is In Another Life. A tone rich electric guitar begins to roar like an engine with an excess of valves. The fuel-hungry motor continues as the bass throws down the rhythmic section in rivers of reverberant atmosphere. Controls To Extremes Liverpool One of the original sounds of the post-punk movement, formed in 1978 at Liverpool’s legendary Eric’s club, Cassius Wolf and Das Abs continue the thread with even more twist. They’ve resurfaced with a fresh batch of recordings seeded by a host of lost cassettes and studio sessions. Reimagining the material, the duo set about rerecording the tracks with extra motivation and experience. Rekindling the spark of youth and celebrating a sense of inventiveness that has undoubtedly evolved into further chapters, Cassius Wolf and Das Abs present An Afternoon In Bedlam. The album is named after the defunct British institution where the insane were kept under lock and key. From the record, with a UK roots reggae garnish, this is Controls To Extremes. NineFortyFive County Galway Modern variation on post-punk and abstracted grooves, with influences as wide as Echo and the Bunnymen, The The, The Cure, and Depeche Mode, Ireland’s pMad is as unique as they get. A kind of grindcore funk with acid-bent beats and philosophical musings; his music sets a tone and a scene like none other. He has an album out, called 1+1=-1, and it’s only available as a product from Bandcamp. The sites who stream on the other hand get the single treatment, one at a time, and as and when pMad decides. He’s only gone and done it again, with NineFortyFive. The new single takes a more insisting and foreboding aura than usual, how is that even possible? We had better find out. A chunky blues style guitar begins the rhythm, and a cymbal-snare beat kicks in immediately. The voice of pMad enters and adds a classy swagger that has a groovy confidence that blends with a gloomy condolence in a steange swirl of emotion. It’s got a serious catchiness that collapses any sense of strange, while retaining the quality of obscurity we know and love from pMad. Showcased at the recent release party in Sydney, with Tokyo’s Anti Itch Cream also on the bill, the 7’’ vinyl record contains the A-side plus Poor Impulse Control – Three Days Deep on the B. Both singles are the follow up material from last year’s Swan Grinder LP, having been given the remix treatment to offer new dimensions. Keep Dancing was rerecorded with guitars this time, the drums and synths were overdubbed too, with a greater sense of drive. As the music came to light, Schkeuditzer Kreuz announced a 19-date tour of Asia in the following months. Cupid In The Sky takes a jazz journey through emotions and artistic movements of music, whereas Piero Piccioni Revibed is a modern and fresh variation album of his late father’s work. Ghosts Ayr Scotland is no stranger to home-grown rock band talent and sprouting up from the lush pastures in recent years, Mixed Signals are bearing early fruit. When the singer, Ben Gardiner, was booked to perform a charity gig, he decided a full band was just the ticket. Putting together a bunch of lads he met at university, Mixed Signals were Christened over a few beers. With Nathan Christie on drums, James Armstrong on the guitar and Leon Calder on the bass, a band became the framework for all things new. This was less than three years ago, and Mixed Signals are already on Spotify and YouTube with professional material. Named after a classic track by The Night Cafe, not to be confused with the AI art generating site, Mixed Signals present their latest manifestation, Ghosts. Written by Ben and Elizabeth Elektra, the song is about the challenges of young adulthood. The way people can make you feel with a word, a look, a joke, it can be for better or worse. It is a cruel world, worse in some other countries, so I always try to look for the things to be grateful for. Things like new music by quality musicians. Give it a spin. It begins with a guitar and synth sound, vocals ring out in clarity, and a classic, feel-good laid-back rhythm unfolds. The smooth rock n roll sway carries through the verses, then a burst of distorted guitar thrusts a new energy over the scene. It peers over the edge with a knowing grin, the chorus changes, a punk style rhythm then takes over, chugging chords pump down the motion while a sleek and seamless vocal continues with the memorable journey. It’s got an infectious progression that just keeps rising up another notch, and then it crescendos into a gentle swim to finish.
