David Thrussell & Shinjuku Thief
The Call Of Cthulhu Metropolis Records The underground culture-smith David Thrussell has entered the world of H.P. Lovecraft for his latest LP. Created alongside Shinjuku Thief, the pair have combined their abilities to evoke the terrible and unspeakable dread from the uncharted territories of consternation. This double disc vinyl contains an epic selection of album tracks never intended for the radio. Prog rock and abstract electronic alike; the long length numbers create much more than a fleeting feeling or a quick step. These are sound adventures, designed for armchairs and long drives. With the combination of Thrussell’s devotion to concept and iconic narrative, and Shinjuku Thief’s dark and numinous electronic repertoire, the twin desks of infinite inner scope complete the circuit and beckon the ancient, elder gods. What stirs beneath the maddening ocean and manifests within the swollen, shifting clay? An eerie dreamscape emerges with swirling atmosphere and pinpoint tension. Tones drift against one another in sweeping bends of harmony and resonance. The drowning sensations rise with outstretched limbs as howling shrieks and abstract voices blow like flags into oblivion. The soundtrack settles down, and David Thrussell begins to speak the story. His narrative is tight and emotive; the resonant voice sinks into the misty evocations of synthesiser as the story drifts between reality and musical concept. A soundtrack of strangeness and drama envelopes the narrator as the words of Lovecraft echo once more in a beautiful extension of life. The album is available for purchase on Bandcamp

I Ya Toyah
Apology Chicago The industrial powerhouse of modern and provocative heaviness I Ya Toyah returns with a follow-up from Feelings. This time, I Ya Toyah is portrayed in a shifting archetype, a chameleon figure who becomes ruler, judge, and temptation in equal parts. A song about self-obsession and moral conviction, the reflection of the world on the mirror of the soul becomes the window to reality when you are your own figurehead. That’s what is being offered in music and video form. A frantic and seductive energy is always on the cards with I Ya Toyah, plus lots of scope for inventive evolution leaves fans always asking what is coming next? Well, it’s Apology. Is she sorry, though? Listen in. A thumping sub-bass clears the air before a synthetic voice begins chanting across icy synth tones. Drums then hit; cymbals, snare, kick, and hats merge with the digital soundtrack of percussive melodies. Toyah pushes the stage; it shudders under the energy of her drama and poise. An entertainer, through sound and vision, the sultry movements and evocative vocal lines coalesce with electric guitars, heavy beats, and a realisation. Everyone owes her an apology. Will she get it? Doubtful, people apologise to Jesus more. You just have to transmute the heavy lead into beautiful gold, like I Ya Toyah. A heavy drift, body moving beats, and a sickness that emerges through art, I A Toyah has displayed power in yet one more form. Yasmina Cherelle
Liberate Me Ireland What a stunning woman, Yasmina Cherelle is here on Sound Read Six to showcase her emotional storytelling alternative pop. She lives in Dublin and spends lots of time in London and L.A. A busy person, always on the move, that energy translates seamlessly into her intelligent songwriting. Yasmina’s music and performance spirit has been developed not only her herself but also with a guitar scholarship, leading her to getting an agent and finding her way when she was still very young. Her song, Liberate Me, is about a difficult and emotional personal time. We all know about those. Trusting your inner guide and knowing you’ll be fine when the advice and instructions from the world are as varied as they are judgemental. Let’s sit back and enjoy her music for a while. It begins like a dream, the 80s and 90s ring out with hip-hop style keyboards that bop to a funky rhythm. The beat catches you on the up then carries you off. Yasmina starts her song, her soulful and strong voice absolutely owns the track, her words splash and stretch across the bars with absolute charm. A selection of notes I can’t begin to describe pitter like rain on the verse, and as the chorus washes in, it’s like a car driving through the puddle left behind and bathing us in the warm clear Irish drench. The bounce, the funk, the soul, her music just seems to fill the Venn diagram with an abstract Platonic solid we’ve never heard before. Lynn Hollyfield
We Are The People United States A call to arms, for holding each other up with, We Are The People is the new single from the award-winning and cultural figurehead Lynn Hollyfield. The Director of Music at The Celebration Centre for Spiritual Living in Falls Church, and a regular compere for the Songwriters of Washington open-mic sessions, Lynn is music through and through. She’s been writing her own breed of pretty American folk since her early years, so fully-fledged she enchants and invents with every new moment. Co-written with playwright and poet Carol Burbank, the song is a lively protest number aimed at bringing unity where tiny differences feel like peas under a dozen mattresses. Are we all so delicate and easily made uncomfortable, like the Princess? This is We Are The People. A buoyant guitar riff bounces out a cosy melodic rhythm, a sense of Janis Joplin fizzes in the chord choices. A verse acts like a runway for the vocal, Lynn Hollyfield begins the song with a dainty delicate timbre, and as the band rise to greet the next section, the emotive quality goes into a new field. It’s like Woodstock, the romantic memory of it, anyway. The dainty fingerpicking action calls like the birdlife chattering in the bushes and trees while Lynn’s human quality brings the web together through shared life. It’s a solidarity song, a mood lifting reminder of what matters most. We all do. Scar Chamber
Ugly On The Inside Kivel Records The lead single from their forthcoming album of the same name, Scar Chamber’s Ugly On The Inside pitches tent and lays the foundation for the epic to come. The album, when out on 21st July, will come with 100 special editions with extra material; pre-orders are open so check the link at the end. The band are not as formulaic as others might be, Scar Chamber enjoy changing things up each time and trying out new directions and musical emotion. Formed and founded by Babylon A.D. guitarist Ron Freschi, and long-term vocal collaborator Jeff Winslow, Scar Chamber always provide expertly crafted and beautifully delivered rock n roll. They take a provocative and emboldened approach to music, capturing grit and melting icy atmospheres by force. Smooth and swaggerish drumming begins the piece; a sultry sway gives rise to a melodic guitar. The notes twirl and flow; the progression leans over and winks before the electric injection. It begins with the verse; distorted guitars push and pull against the flowing emotions. Vocals similar to Def Leppard or Ray Wilson of Stiltskin, gruff yet beautifully sculpted. The push of rock and roll energy keeps the song in acceleration mode for the chorus; fancy guitarwork fortifies the track as catchy lines keep us listening. It’s a song about feeling flawed, feeling like a sinner perhaps, or the modern version. Ugly. It’s a gorgeous song, and art imitates life. Soft Science
Spinning California With urgency and impact, the California dream-gaze front-runners bring us Spinning. Based in Sacramento, Soft Science are preparing to release their new album in September. Out on Shelflife Records and Spinout Nuggets in the US and the UK respectively, their single Spinning opens the door of summertime vibe with a pressing energy. The lineup remains the same for their 5th LP, honouring their gel-like writing technique with a new section of road headed to the stars. Spinning is about being stuck in an emotional loop, others can’t interpret your message clearly and you try every angle you can you teach it. Remember at school when teachers would explode when we didn’t get the right answer? The shoe is now on the other foot, I know. You have to laugh. This is Soft Science with their mentally stimulating Spinning. Vibrant chords with note bends and epic distortion effects create a percussive landscape as the drums hit out the ordinance for each grid reference. The leaping energy is like B52s or Green Day and the guitar tone tingles with that synonymous dreamy sound. Vocals snake in, soprano / falsetto style high end lyrics surf the wave of sound like a well-practiced athlete. The high of the day carries in the stitching like golden thread, sparkling with ever present lustre.
