Forbidden (Shadow Mix) Montreal Alive and kicking since 2021, the avant-garde post-punk trio Sexsomnia have been laying out their upbeat dreary vision along singles, EPs, and a show stopping album. Since the release of last year’s Transcendent, the full-length record on the French label Manic Depression Records, Sexsomnia have gone back to the studio to bring another volley of darkwave and electro-goth from shade to reality. Philip Faith, the bassist, programmer, and vocalist of the group has used his Moog Minitaur, ACCESS Virus T1, VSynth, plus a bunch of analogue devices to create a darkly Shadow Mix for this title track. Featuring the vocals of Stridulum’s Marita Volodina, the track has been produced with a dreamcore style video made by editing some old arty photoshoot footage and putting it to music. It’s like stepping into another reality. Check it out. A grinding industrial rhythm opens the track with mechanical sounds melding with thudding percussion. A digitised vocal then speaks in a dominatrix-esque tone before a throbbing bass riff hits. Bubbling undertones vibrantly jibe at the rhythm as the bass icks along the passageway in ample and bounding steps. Marita Volodina continues with her commanding presence, moving her lyrics through snaking twists of melody and mesmerism. Documentation is from the soon-to-be released new album. October’s Dear Wanderlust and its first single explore the human condition in minute musical detail, perceptions and progressions are set down in score for the masses to absorb and hopefully adore. Buzzbomb Studios’ Paul Miner has brought the single to life, which gets underway as of now. They’ve shared the stage with legends galore and they’ve been involved with the world-famous Flogging Molly Salty Dog Cruise. Traditional Americana folk, bluegrass, and an exquisite variety of punk. The Menu Los Angeles Taken from their second album Found, that was released summer last year, this new music video for The Menu takes Jane Doe and their vibrant rock and charismatic sound to the top-class venue. What’s The Menu all about? It makes a scene and an adventure with the dualistic phenomenon of chaos and calm. Directed by Ava Taulere, the video shows vocalist Izzy and her band moving from riffs and rhythms with expert grace. Having shaved her head, Izzy wants to make a point about honouring the fresh start and being confident enough to take square one all over again. We can do it reluctantly of confidently, so it’s a great way to instil a heroic streak in yourself by acquainting with this video. It begins with a fantastic and grinding guitar riff, crunching distortion chews the tone and delivers a mechanical power through the progression. A powerful and no-nonsense vocal then joins in. Heavy rock with a blues scale decorating the words, Izzy thrusts her force with a sudden female energy that envelopes the emotional background. The single, out now, is titled Soul Crusher and is designed to do exactly that with its hard-hitting and masterful mix of gothic, metal, and darkwave. Written about the loss of a loved one and all the ideals of the person begin to crumble, when you start to wonder if you even knew the real them at all, the fallibility of the eyes is revealed every time. Emily is written about a childhood friend, who’s memory colours her imagination to this day.
