Coming Up Roses
Gotta Lose It All London No-nonsense female led rock music energy with a thoughtful and engaging lyrical style, Coming Up Roses put London’s alt-music scene firmly in the top rankings. You’ve got to be good to be able to consistently produce the best sounding hard rock this side of the noughties, and with the band’s conviction and courage, full steam ahead doesn’t give it enough credence. Coming Up Roses have a new double-A single out now, Gotta Lose It All and Hello Miss Anxiety offer a polar juxtaposition of themes that reach out and grab your attention. When singer Emily Sera and guitarist Darius Oon moved to Britain from Singapore in 2022, they had a mission that saw them become stars within just a few years. Alongside Charlie Wilson and Caleb Blake, talent and effort with exceptional artist quality all mix, and when the temperature is right, the production always meets the target. Even then, sometimes, you Gotta Lose It All. A drifting reverb guitar with keyboard sound and drums begins the music as the dreamy and slightly melancholy melody spans into infinity. The key shifts in a small upbeat flicker of life and then the vocals begin. A graceful and pretty first verse hits with indie rock style palm-mute riffs. The progression climbs, step by step, up the ladder of impression and finds a second wave of passion as the chorus takes off. Bass and guitar thrust outward with the familiar pattern, extra projection from the whole band gives a new lift to the song. A seriously groovy classic rock feel is written through the entire piece, it’s got fire and energy yet sinks in with eloquence and savoir faire. Laptop
Additional Animals Hurricane Cove Records If you wanted a song about the crazy situation we’re in right now, then this might be the one you’re looking for. Themed on the consumer economy and the extinction of species, meat industry practices, and lots more, Additional Animals from Laptop has it all. The electro music project of Jesse Hartman, founder of the band Sammy, with releases on Geffen and Fire, Laptop takes Hartman to the other end of his field. His project has been in sleep mode for a while, that is until a recent TikTok video went viral and received over 4 million views. Teaming up with Grammy-winning producer Mario McNulty, Jesse Hartman and his 19-year-old son Charlie, as the newest member, bring Additional Animals. Seaside sounds and plucking notes begin the piece before a synthesiser tone takes the lead. A major key embellishes the chord structure as vocals join the flow. Quick vocal lines bounce along the bars with a happy-go-lucky energy that’s a lot of fun. The music resonates between electronic beats and synthesiser sounds along the melodic ukulele twang that launches us into holiday sensations. A barrage of instrumentation unleashes as horns and trumpets add yet more texture to the thick and sweet, soft mix of sounds. Pop music style melodies fit together with a clever composition that flies in the face of standard bangers. Find out more on the Laptop website You can follow Laptop on Facebook TikTok and X
The Quality Of Mercury
Ganymede Pennsylvania Aligning with shoegaze and dreamwave luminaries such as Hum, M83, Failure, and Trauma Ray, the solo project of Jeremiah Rouse The Quality Of Mercury is back on the cards. Can you believe it’s been nine years since the previous work? Transmission took the artist to skybound heights and rivering reach. His mission, to explore texture, emotion, and sound with a theme of science fiction and a space-age childish wonder matured into musical talent. Deep into the void, where the sun’s rays are cooler and scarcer, a lonely space station becomes the theatre for romance. Meet Ganymede, the moon of Jupiter that sits perfectly outside the radiation released from the distended storm factory. How does this story unfold? We might not hear you scream but we can hear you fall in love, thanks to this new single. It begins with a rock n roll drum score that break into a burst of vibrancy with effected guitars, keyboards, and voice combining to reveal the story. A graceful curve of progression takes the music from middle-road song to soaring harmonies of reverb and space. Are we lost or is this part of the journey? The mind working in parallels, the narrative feels natural and flowing while the outside influences swirl and coalesce in abstract and haunting ways. Leaps of melody revel in open networks of scale and chord as the inventive and dramatic music unfolds and depicts a stream of moving sensations. Blakes
Faith Ft. Ashley Tragic and Serena Dench United Kingdom If you’ve not heard of Blakes yet, then you have now. And you’ll be asking yourself where you’ve been. From working as a model for brands like Diesel, Versace, and Moncler, then trying out as a pro footballer, Danny Blake is now a big-time boxer and music producer. With a face made for Versace, is boxing such a good idea? He must have a lot of guts and an ego that can withstand all the taunts the world can echo. A run of three singles is currently underway, this latest is the second on the list and is made with the timeless skills of Ashley Tragic and Serena Dench. From the streets of home-grown Fulham, what he calls a troubled past, and a curve of progression that’s taken him to international fandom, who can resist his Faith. Effect and piano bring out a cinematic atmosphere as bass plunges in to gift a bump for the vocal. The vocal begins, his London-esque rapping style is dressed in simulacrums that remind us of the entire scene. Three vocalists take it in turns to let the verbs reveal the inner mentality, portrayed in style and rhythmic poetry, as Serena does her part the angelic harmonies of her voice twinkle like overhead starlight. A hip-hop and RnB journey that’s laid back yet refreshingly emotional, Faith is easy to learn, and you can get your mates in to get the sound right. You can follow Blakes on TikTok and Facebook
Templeton Pek
Artifact Birmingham The never-ending work of the heavy-duty punk trio Templeton Pek continues. Fresh from touring with Hell Is For Heroes, Urethane, Bodyjar, and a live show with Less Than Jake, the boys are back, and they’ve put together Artifact. A statement about the urgency of these times, in whatever direction you happen to look, the confrontational lyrics tackle the entire spectrum. Savages comes out at the beginning of October and this single from the album will be just the beginning when it comes to fresh and ferocious energy. In the ten years since they started, Templeton Pek have relentlessly released music and performed on parallel schedules. Heavier than ever and with the ball comprehensively rolling, can you handle Artifact? Harmonising chords and aggressive, sweary lyrics punch open the concrete wall with swaggering ease as melodic heaviness munches on loud and passionate drumming. An infectious layering of riff and lyric brings out a spinning feel that throws us from side to side, holding on whited knuckled. The masculine energy rips through the progression with brilliant craftsmanship meeting emotional insistency along frantic and intelligent deliveries of punk rock. It’s got serious momentum, carrying us on and up through tidal barrages of power-chord and operatic vocal projection. Paradox Obscur
Vulgar Sequence Greece It’s almost time for the new Paradox Obscur album, intriguingly called IKONA, the record hits the sites on September 12. The third single from the upcoming LP is Vulgar Sequence. A synthwave duo from Greece, the ethereal and dreamlike quality of their sound is maximised on this latest snippet. The track is written about the pitfalls of addiction, idolisation of toxic influences, and allowing oneself to be dominated. Chewy indeed, yet the music is written to ensure the philosophy slips in without a fight. Italian filmmaker Simone Pellegrini has put his own imagination to work on the video, and Serra Kösebay distinctly plays the role of the tortured soul for the judiciously choreographed production. For your viewing pleasure, here it is. Vulgar Sequence. Chunky synths open the tune with rippling bass and splashing hi hats that produce an invigorating rhythm. Sound effects zap and swirl in the mix as the momentum increases over the bars. The lyrics begin, robotic and slightly monotonous, an interesting drama runs over the space. Are we hearing the stream of consciousness from a disturbed evil genius or the delusional dreams of a teenage literary fan. Possibly it’s both, and as the music pulses on with ever moving sections of crumble and slurge, the insistent and devilish words continue to push and penetrate with grasping lines of poetic exclamation.
