Starry Skies Light In Your Soul From Small Wonders Fox Star Records Glasgow's Starry Skies prepare for their new album release with a great sounding single to kick off the party. A firm fan favourite, Light In Your Soul is proudly sitting on this new record that's already been tried and tested in venues and studios alike. Known around the city and beyond for their folk rock style and their seemingly endless energy, their full-on band sound is easily recognisable for anyone who's been acquainted. Starry Skies was formed in 2014 after moving and inspirational personal encounters between Warren from the band and icons of entertainment including Nina Simone and Iggy Pop (tap the links for eBay merch). Since their formation, Starry Skies have created a significant following and simultaneously earned support slots for the likes of Snow Patrol and Teenage Fanclub. It begins with a solitary voice singing. We're drawn in to the sound of finger clicks and duet harmony. Bass and drum enters with a throbbing motif that sinks in to the pace of the verse. Then, with a smashing of cymbal and snare, the lead guitar changes the energy with uplifting chords. Mellow and progressive, poetic lyrics with romantic entries spin a tale of wanderlust and seeking that we all feel connected to. The song asks us to take a look in the other direction and see the light within us, the end of the tunnel might be right under our feet. Organ and guitar merge together with compositional chemistry as the male and female vocals rise to the occasion under bright starry skies. Candy Coffins Seaside Girls From Once Do It With Feeling Just in time for the new album release in just a couple of days, it's time to grab an earful of Seaside Girls from post-punk evocateurs Candy Coffins. If you like bands like The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Afghan Whigs, and You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, (tap the links for eBay swag) then you'll love the musical prowess of this modern sounding group. Their first release in two years, Once Do It With Feeling offers a tantalising treatise of tracks of which we're lucky enough to have a taste with their recent video. Originating in 2018 from the idea that bands not on the radio were often better than the ones that were, Candy Coffins crystallised around the post-punk sound with the finest ingredients of like-minded musicians. It begins with a vibrant swish of guitar that's bumped up by rhythm and bass. Drums pin the bars to the loose chugging riff as inflections hit the pulse. Piano and vocal join the music, upbeat melodies and a punchy delivery whack us with a draft of warming air that brings the imagination into being. A party atmosphere revels in the freeing spirit encapsulated within the composition. Hooks and catchy lines bounce from the rock n roll attitude and unbound feeling in every section. Seaside Girls is a great advert for summertime, a poignant soundtrack to memory, and a great sounding rock song. A real hard-working group of players, their musical debut made its way to us only in 2018. The next two came a year after each other in a back-to-back run of energy and output. This time it's been a slightly longer wait but it has genuinely been worth it as the band have exceeded themselves once again. Taking influence from bands such as Cabaret Voltaire and A Certain Ratio, adopting the talents of The Pop Group's Mark Stewart along with the mixing skills of the iconic Adrian Sherwood, this latest album has expanded the horizon in every direction for this fast-rising act. Here's the single. Streams of deep synth rise in expressive rumblings as the drums enter with sinking energy. Heady tones begin to churn and glisten in the upper spaces as a wandering funk bass thrills the undercarriage with vibrancy. A saxophone bursts through the pattern, adding organic sensibility to the base of repeating rhythms. Keyboards then rise to take a lead for a moment before the band makes way for avant-garde yet absolutely modern lyrics. Highlighting the problems still to solve in the world, many originating from the top and the bottom consecutively, a short burst of intention culminates in the poignant thoughts left lingering once the sounds have stopped. Recorded in Finland, Rasmus Hedlund has just released Far on Ljudverket Records with lots of meaning wrapped in the package. Over the past few years the twist and flow of our emotions have been crafted into unique and unidentifiable shapes. Through the medium of exploratory music, Rasmus Hedlund has manifested a rhetoric and expressive form through the scope of electronic language. Far meaning Father in Hedlund's Swedish language and Far meaning distance when recalling the journey travelled, the music draws a line between the two points of reference and explains the space between them. Track one is Rytmisk. It opens with layered beats and reverberant sounds that drip and pool in wet spaciousness. Drops of bass push the drums through the floor and create cellars of potentiality that sneak up the dusty stairs to meet the room. The intensity rises with pulsations of drum and rising pressures from wispy sonics and flashes of mechanical procedure. More tone twists through in deep and breathy tubes, chord forms sparkle on opaque flooring as the heady percussion adapts and coils according to the gentle adjustments. Graceful and exotic, the following of rhythms and blurring of tempos add an intensity and propinquity of sound that effervesces with fizzy determination. Abstractions of ambience drive the mysterious destinations onward with subtle shifts in topographic evolution. In that near-decade since her previous release, she's been completely entwined with her duo AyOwA. By mixing the delicate beauty of an expertly played piano with evocative electronica and haunting vocals, her culmination of talents forms a vibrant flame that warms everything she does. On this fourth album, Hannah Schneider takes another step into the void of chaos-less silence and begins to manifest her spirit through the dexterity of articulate expression. A peppering of thumping drums rises with reflected water sunshine as bubbles rise to the surface. As the tension breaks a series of piano keys meander through the ripples. Hannah Schneider beings, her voice floats in charming apparitions that tingle like velvet draperies in candle-light. Slow and meaningful chants encompass the thud of a drum with the zenith-like chorus that holds the scene in place. A generous mix of reverberations and tone laps like milky light from opalescent oceans in the deep morning twilight.
