Red Lorry Yellow Lorry
Driving Black (Ding’s Remix) Leeds Anything that makes me feel young again is worth my time at least once, and Red Lorry Yellow Lorry were formed the year I was born. That’ll do, they sound as good as they should for their level of experience and the million hours they’ve spent doing what they love. The band’s first radio single since 1991, their producer and bassist Simon “Ding” Archer reveals a new shimmering side to their popular song. Having worked with The Fall, Pixies, PJ Harvey, 1919, and plenty of others, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry are undoubtedly thrilled to have this guy on their roster. Known for their edgy and minimalist post-punk sound, the band known endearingly as The Lorries (it’s just as hard to type as it is to say) are preparing for their new Driving Black EP release just as soon as the remix single makes it around the circuit a few times. Let’s start the ignition. It begins with a tight drumscore with a slight punk thrill to the tempo. Vibrant and harmonious guitars then begin to chug and radiate with shining rock powerchords. The vocals enter, rhythmic and straight, a telephone distortion adds warmth and character to the lyrics. It’s like we’re listening in over the CB radio. The chorus gets it just right as the riff launches into a new section to break up the song. A pulsing and loop-based rhythm keeps the motion going in a vertical direction as the music keeps pushing the limits on how many times we can move our head in 3 and a half minutes. FangSlinger
The Lost Souls Saloon Death Valley Premiering their new and inventive sound, FangSlinger present their debut single The Lost Souls Saloon. Three ghostly outlaws, once lured by the gold rush in California’s dawn twilight, now roam the deserts and hills in search of lost souls. Lead singer FangSlinger is joined by his trusted companions Hangman Frost and BloodRose, the band relive their memories of freedom and heterodoxy. Blending the lines between reality, fan fiction, and pure musical fantasy, the FangSlinger gang stand and deliver with all the gusto of wild-eyed countrymen while remaining as proficient and polished as the fastest draw on Spotify. A heavy metal tidal surge hits the breakers with thumping bass and melodic chord riffs that get the lead guitar treatment. A pumping engine of sound courses through the motions with a sludge metal rhythm. The vocal begins, nu-metal influences clearly make this band tick, yet the meat of the band carries a style that has roots right back in the 70s. Blues and rock form the backbone the composition with punchy bass and drums injecting the flow with a noughties kick we can feel. Dynamism and the power of rock make this a must have playlist track if you like it heavy or if you like it hard. The Wood
Let It Loose River Dream Records Recorded at Ark Recording Studios, where acts such as Ella Guru, Michael Head, Red Elastic Band, and The Stairs have laid down their magic, venue owner Steve Powell joins forces with Alex Evans to bring The Wood’s Let It Loose. Written about never giving up and going for the centre of the target every time, accepting the pitfalls for what they were and climbing right back out of them, Let It Loose sees the Liverpool duo showcase their creative prowess with their surprisingly huge sound. This single comes from their album, Days, which is out in just over a month from now. Presented as a music video made by the industry diamond Dylan Cox, the film features pro boxer Jake Harrison with some other, less than desirable individuals. A harmony of brass-wind opens the music before a funky bass driven rhythmic surge takes control. The swagger takes on a strutting sentimentality as the music slurries forward in gravely and kinetic rumbles of tone. The vocals hit home with a dose of baritone smoothness. A subtle harmony from the feminine side lends open directions that expand and grow with the breaking of the chorus. Drumming tightly pins the jazzy funk to the mark with metered fills and rattling bars. A cacophony of instruments leaps outward in directions only dreamed of as the dynamo of songwriting spins on its axis of groove. Joe Geni
City Of Light NYC Influenced by artists like Peter Gabirel and Elbow, the New York City based singer-songwriter presents his passionate third album. Joe Geni draws us closer to the concept of the city with Cities Built Upon Cities. In the modern day we sometimes forget that what surrounds us used to be a much older infrastructure. This too was likely built on something much older still. A layer-cake of archaeology sits beneath our feet, and for cities like New York, one of the first major post-Columbus settlements in America, the local history tells the full story. City Of Light is taken from the album and is given a single status. It is sure to illuminate the rest of the record for us, which has been produced, mixed, and mastered by Charlie Nieland who’s worked with Blondie, Debbie Harry, Scissor Sisters, and Dead Leaf Echo plus many more. A melancholy tone reveals fragile melodies that begin to radiate across the bars. Drums and bass fill the spaces, fortifying the synthesiser. Joe Geni sings, his musicality is obvious as the notes and delivery spin and leap across creatively accurate scales. The quietly evolving melody pushes the boundary of flow with each passing line. As the chorus forms, an electric guitar joins the composition, lifting the tones into new resonances and glimmer. Then, as the music breaks for a moment, distorted slides take us on an abstract dreamride before the chorus rejoins the soundsphere. Elements of rock and blues dance with evocative folk-inspired showmanship to create a cinematic and memorable style.
