Musical Royalty Descends From The Pyramid Of Dreams It’s The King Canutes With The Mixture As Before28/11/2025
The King Canutes
The Mixture as Before Magic Door Record Label A pairing of premium talents and the hand-picked selection of musician friends from across their vibrant and far-reaching scene, The King Canutes present their debut album. Eastern Seaboard, Perfect Summer perhaps encapsulates the feeling of the whole season with its twisting narratives and exploratory provocations, creating a wealth of deep-thinking material. Of course, the music sounds good; the album has been fifteen years in the making from idea to product. The permanent members Keir Woods and Richard Alwyn Fisher have enlisted the talented music producer Ray Ketchem to make the record, with people like Mac Gollehon who’s worked with David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Durran Durran, and Al Jarreau. They’ve also invited Dave Derby from Dam Busters, Lloyd Cole, and Gramercy Arms, Kendal Jane Meade of Sparklehorse and Mascott, Mike Dillon from Rickie Lee Jones’ outfit, and Jessie Kilguss who we’ve featured before, plus many more, it’s a seriously rich and multi-intelligence-oriented work of music art. The standout track for today is The Mixture as Before, and as ambitious as it is principled, it’s ready for you right now. A solitary vocal begins the magic with a gazeful lyric about brown eyes. They knock you out, or so we’re told. A muted electric guitar begins to add vibrant passages of music within the folky vocal main road. The progression reaches higher; the band kicks in with a full-on classic rock sound. Electric guitar with distorted strings like a bluesy back-street bar jangle with a sunny acoustic that shines with a solid pinewood timbre. Backing vocals bring out new harmonies in the mixture as the captivating composition sways from this and that, elevating various tones and musical instrumental sections, and offers us a comfy voice that rings with a pulchritudinous baritone. Aranda
You Don’t Wanna Know Oklahoma City Grunge certainly is not dead, and neither is rock n roll. The brothers Dameon and Gabe Aranda have teamed up to ensure the genre lives on for another generation. For twenty years their band have been creating emotional feedback and melodic riffs that push the boundary and reform the inner child. They hit the big-time in 2008 when their debut self-titled album landed two top 40 singles. Their “whyyawannabringmedown” was covered by Kelly Clarkson on her platinum-selling All I Ever Wanted album. It was so popular that even WWE’s The Bash adopted it as a theme tune. No stranger to the open road, the band have played alongside some of the scene’s most luminous creatives including Papa Roach, Sevendust, Saving Abel, Staind, and Buck Cherry. The list continues. You Don’t Wanna Know continues the epic story through adventurous composition and elevated feeling. Perhaps it’s a bit of reverse psychology going on, but I really want to know what this song is like. Let’s listen. A rush of sound rips into a wall of guitar and synth. The bass pumps along a seriously snappy drum pattern that sits up and grabs you by the collar. Leather jackets and ripped jeans music, white trainers and electric guitars. A classic grunge feel merges with electronic grooves that surge from roiling imaginations no longer tempered by tradition. There’s a kick and a punch that sits aggressively against classically mature and competent performances. Forward facing and confident hard rock stitches the whole thing together as emotional passages hit the corridors of progression and mood change. If you like Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, and Queens of the Stone Age, then Aranda fit perfectly on your supermix. Find out more on the Aranda website Follow Aranda on Instagram and TikTok
Jorge Wilson
Gemini Stoke-On-Trent Resolving to bring the retro feel back into your life, Stoke’s trailblazing composer Jorge Wilson conjures Gemini. Blending modern techniques with traditional methods, Jorge is able to isolate some of the best elements of both styles to reinvent the classic sound. His inspirations come from artful and memorable bands like The 1975, Mac DeMarco, and Steve Lacy. He’d been in bands himself for most of his music life, working to gel and combine various ethics and motivations. Deciding to free himself from the demands of teamwork and the holding back of lesser dreams and weaker disciplines (I’ve been there), Jorge Wilson took the brave decision to go out on his own. No easy task, producing solo material and getting it into the earshot of listeners requires dedication, skill, and determination. That’s where Sound Read Six comes in, great music for great listeners - like Castor and Pollux; it’s Gemini. A glorious tone envelopes the strumming of a buoyant guitar. Vocals shimmer on moving platforms dressed in lights and colour. Vibrant synths add extra punch to the swaggering mix. The retro vibe hits hard as the rhythm and mixing takes us to a funky lounge pumped with a moving disco ball and a bar complete with 1980s prices. Get in. The powerful chord pattern throws in a distorted layer for the middle-eight. Chunky blues licks endorse the steady rock and funk rhythm that captures and commands. Laid-back and melodic, and with a sense of Nick Kershaw, Jorge Wilson delivers an entertaining, head satisfying piece. We want more. You can follow Jorge Wilson on Instagram and TikTok
Dave Pen
Feeder Mind JAR Records BirdPen and Archive member Dave Pen has just put out his latest solo record. Called Life Inside The Feeder Mind, the record contains the title track Feeder Mind as well as the singles No Hiding and Life Life Life. With fans likening his sound to that of Thom Yorke of Radiohead and with the trip-hop style rhythms of Massive Attack, a seriously English and modern feeling combination of alternative intellectualism brings the wave. The album coincides with a documentary about him and his running career. The film Run Again follows his journey through the legendary Spine Race, a 268-mile run through Britain in winter. He’s got a lot of distance behind him, with several top 10 releases in multiple countries, sold out arena shows, and a serious back-catalogue of stellar variation. Let’s tap into The Feeder Mind. A deep and sensual bass from a piano key turns the head and creates tension. Ticking drums and digital blips take the pace and lead us into a chanting vocal. A building of pressure causes the music to swell within a box, confined and growing the edges begin to stretch and bend as whatever is within prepares to burst free. Pulsing guitar adds a new form of melody; the self-similar notes carry a heavy weight of ensuing crunch. Then, a burst of chord unleashes a dynamic rush of potency. Piano and guitar combine in a unison of projection as the bass throbs with persistent grip. Moody and melancholy, and epic like a memorable dream, Feedermind prepares the scene. Patchwork Rattlebag
Vertigo Dreams Salford The spirit of Manchester is concentrated and poured from the Salford pewter jug of plenty. Patchwork Rattlebag have been making quite a name for themselves in recent months, and they’ve just released their debut record. Fragments 1 is out now and is a generous dose of home-grown original talent, including stand-out tracks Hook, Line, and Riser, On My Own, and today’s feature Vertigo Dreams. The electronic music collective reveals a psychedelic moodiness with a folk-rock element stitched into the programming. Utilising the magic of the human voice and the spectral poignancy of digital technology, Patchwork Rattlebag explore the spaces and the zones that only alchemy can reach. From the amplifier lead to gold, via the human mind, here is Vertigo Dreams. A strange atmosphere spirals out from the intro then falls into a guitar phrase that trembles with folk classicness. The vocal enters, dainty and poetic, a sweet frolic through memory and aroma takes us through a spacey daydream of haze and nature. The musical phrase hum with a summery brimful glass of sweet fizz as delicate and massaging vocal harmonies ghost and speak through the walls of tranquil sound. The retro sensibility in the mix conjures fantasy and nostalgia as cassette warmth feels like glistening magnetism within the machine. Static Lives
Modest Criminal Records Featuring the awesome vibe of songwriter, singer, and front woman, Lori, the latest offering from the Criminal Records roster of class is Static Lives. By reinventing the 80s with electronic glamour and pounding rhythms, a new dimension of studio wizardry brings out an epic and modern feel. Their new single is out now, by the name of Modest. There is very little information about this band, and rather than making something up, let’s just move along and listen to the music. Maybe they really do live in a giraffe. A bouncing electro bass begins the beat as drums and lyrics enter on the next bar. Lori puts us through our paces with her dualistic vocal style, she has range, emotional projection, and a confidence we can’t paint over. A smooth rhythm pinches the timing as synths glitter and shine within the mix. Vocal forms the avenue, we ride along with Lori as the verse chorus buzzes through the bus lane at decent speed. The girl next door quality of the vocal gives us a sense of party time that reminds us of balloons and goodie bags. Fun, upbeat, and easy to recognise, powerpop meets post-punk in fishnets and fur.
