Wake Up And Smell The Ripped Paper On This Christmas Morning With Ellie Walker And The Folly25/12/2024
Ellie Walker And The Folly
This Christmas Morning Cambridge When Saturday Night Gym Club remixed I Know by Ellie Walker with a dance music twist, her stunning voice became something of a commodity. A series of live shows and a debut album have made all the right moves and fans are dripping with anticipation for the next thing. Following from 2023’s Sink Or Swim, the band have been enjoyed on a massive scale with her music even being featured on an advert for Rotary Watches. Now with a full band, endearingly named The Folly, the folk singer is completely in the Christmas spirit with This Christmas Morning. A tongue in cheek classic about an elf called Frosty and a fairy called Eve, the magic of the big day is reinvented and packaged beautifully for an alternative to the same old hits we endure each year. Let’s get another earworm. A ticking clock brings on a homely sense of quiet stillness. Ellie Walker begins her song, the music coils like windy snowfall and glistens as the dawn light reflects and shines. Ellie’s voice is an instant hit, a beautiful timbre and a clear elocution gives her voice a timeless polish and feel that only she can own. The folk style classic delivery provides nestled spots on all the syllables and takes notes like flowers picked from the colourful meadow of summer memory. A joyous and story-filled folk number, the song reminds us that even if like me, you’re on your own today, we’re never alone with magic and friends just a heartbeat away. The Kut
Waiting For Christmas Criminal Records The Kut is back to welcome in the festive cheer and bring home a message of care for everyone at this open-hearted time. Waiting For Christmas is the charity single that raises funds every year and has now entered its fifth annual release. A fantastic ballad sung by The Kut and set to a moving music video; the grunge rockers tone down their cacophony to show us their more tender side. We still get a great rock song and the Christmas spirit is entangled like last-year's fairy-lights well within the music. This year’s charity, chosen by The Kut, is White Ribbon Charity and for every sale of the record, £1 will go to them. What do they do? White Ribbon feels that men and boys need to be educated on how to treat women and make a genuine effort to end violence against women. No one’s saying that all men and boys are going to hurt women unless they’re taught. Like Santa knows, some of us are naughty and the rest of us are nice. Most people of all genders are perfectly safe to be around. Men and boys are statistically more likely to be involved in violent crime against their partners and their friends so a gender-specific approach is needed to address this. It may feel discriminatory for a lot of men and boys, we just have to take one for the country on this. Women and girls need us. Mutual respect across genders is of course essential for healthy relationships and for staying out of trouble, and for some, knowing how to manage emotions is a real problem. Whether you’re upset, angry, or attracted, you can’t let your emotions break the rules with anybody. There are plenty of legal and safe ways to express yourself. So that being said, the charity message loud and clear, let’s give the song another listen and I’ll describe it with today’s ears ready. The Kut enters with her synonymous voice, the punk twinge layers like icing on the lush flow of bluesy sombre musicianship. Guitars and bass play a slow melody of picked chords, roots, and fifths on a scale of minor introspection. As the chorus hits, the band revs up a gear and pushes the energy into an orbital destination. Once the rockets are fired, and the celebration fulfils, a new verse brings us back down to Earth, where trouble and worries still mingle with the tinsel and baubles. We can lend them our peace in these caring days, free from judgement, making peace with the moment to welcome in an empowered new year. One step at a time will be enough for anybody. Legendary Pink Dots
So Lonely In Heaven Metropolis Records Fully aware of the huge issues that make life miserable for millions around the globe and with a desire to medicate and mediate through sound adventures, The Legendary Pink Dots return to Metropolis Records with So Lonely In Heaven. A new album is always a good thing and their fans are already thrilled with the four tracks so-far released from the record, which includes the title track So Lonely In Heaven. Formed way back in 1980 between English and Dutch musicians, Legendary Pink Dots are a casual forerunner in many overlapping genres. Their surrealist album cover ties them to the hippy scene while their magnificent musicianship and studio mastery give them a generous dose of larger than life. A concept song, So Lonely In Heaven offers the scenario where eternity is actualised and fulfilled and all you can do is repeat yourself endlessly. I guess for the whole thing to be appealing we’d need to become much more than what we currently are, and able to imagine, manifest, and design in infinitely more dimensions of awareness. Being able to create as well as this band would be a step in the right direction, so maybe they know something we don’t? A computer sound and Tannoy voice opens the music with a retro-sci-fi feel. Acoustic guitars enter on a chilled vibe, bumped with reverb and chorus, the sound fills spaces and angles that exceed the box. A folky vocal begins, the steel strings of the guitars and the tippy tap of the drum lends an archaic atmosphere as stunning effects offer granular modernity among the flow of the mix. Keyboards rise with chimes; ghostly bells vibrate in tonal harmony to the dream. As something changes, the plug is pulled, and a nightmare edge is invited in. Something gives space for the discordancy and allows it to breathe. In doing so, beautiful harmonies rise from the wake of the shade, slipstreams of shadow fold to reveal a deeper light within. Crash Harmony
Velour Goddess Magic Door Records Bringing back the magic of their college days at Yale University, Crash Harmony have reunited to bring their catalogue to life. They made it pretty big back in the 1980s, drawing in crowds and making a name for themselves among their contemporaries. As with a lot of college bands, when graduation came around and life needed to be lived, the glue that held the music together begins to crumble. I don’t think any of the band were entirely happy with this, with dreams of the stage revisiting their memories over the last 30 years. They reformed in 2022 and enlisted some of the industry’s most influential professionals (Ray Ketchum, Magic Door Studios, Shameless Promotion PR) to bring an album into being. Their new album is now on the way and to start the party we get two new singles of which Velour Goddess is featured today. A cool guitar lick brings the feel of the day back to life as the drumming makes it all real. The guitars begin to strum, the bass adds tone and vibe, and the country-blues sound of the band rises. Classic rock with a hint of psychedelia, the music moves like a line-dance as roundabouts keep the time for children to take part. The vocal has a grunge edge, a husky timbre gives the music character and depth while the band expertly produce a soaring current of collaborative jamming and entertainment. Jessie James
Rise And Shine Thousand Island Records Originally from Montreal in Canada and a mother of four, the hard-working and fully empowered Jessie James brings a ukulele folk-punk party to our ears. Throughout her life, she’s done what many others have done, and clawed her way up and out of difficult situations. The amount of personal strength required to not mirror the society around you and gravitate towards another kind of archetype regardless of square one is massive. You have to be able to imagine it, believe it, and not let doubt fill your ship. As she’s progressed through life, the trained visual artist used her ukulele to express and compound her feelings. Now a dab hand at the little guitar, and with a brilliance we can all admire, Jessie James presents her new single Rise And Shine on Thousand Island Records. Jessie James begins the song with immediate vocal and the ukulele tone hits the pitch perfectly as if by magic. Her lyrics tell the story about being in charge of change, confident in the future, and mindful of every positive footstep forward. A song about motivation and self-actualisation, whatever happens on the way. Its choppy chords bounce to the time of a joyful heart as the melody of the lyrics bobs along like a little boat. Rise And Shine is a two-minute step-change track, one that can take you by surprise if you’re feeling a little bit blue. You can follow Jessie James on Instagram and Facebook PS. Be Blown Away By The Brash Talent Of Utah-Based Bridge The Gap With Their New Single In The Throes13/12/2024
Bridge The Gap
In The Throes Salt Lake City The explosive rise of Utah’s melodic punk legends Bridge The Gap has been something of a phenomenon for all involved. It was just 2023 when they hit the headlines with Secret Kombinations, their debut disruptive record. Now their highly-anticipated new album is almost ready to make the stage, so naturally the band have a cracking new single to kick off the event. In The Throes was recorded at Colorado’s The Blasting Room, renowned for bringing to life some of the scene’s most celebrated numbers. Produced by the man behind Black Flag and Descendants, Bill Stevenson, then mixed and mastered by Grammy-Award winner Jason Livermore, the single and its accompanying LP are enshrined in professionalism and are well worth your immediate attention. Palm-muted blues-punk opens the score with a tasty riff that tells its own story. The melody repeats and shifts, then drums and rhythm guitar hit the tone with a rampage of distortion and chord. The bass thumps with the tempo and key as the vocal delivers a tuneful and free-flowing spiral of song. The verse grows like a tree, notes and melody evolve and branch out as the chords and rhythm hammer in the patterns. Harmonising voice and artistic drum-fills make this more than a punk-song, it’s a well-composed and cinematic journey through sound and lyrics with a great dress code. The guitars continue to demonstrate the prowess of the finger-work as the song flows with ease from section to section as the powerful surge of energy is funnelled through sound.
