He’s been working on a new album all year. When you’re as reputable as Grammy-winning Odin, the more you’re inspired to discover the facets and depths of what you have going. His new album is called Nudes and is offered up as an image of being caught naked, with a cigarette hanging from your mouth. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? I wonder what the lyrics are prepared to share. This single from the record, called Kiss Kiss Hello, takes the artist’s genre-blending style through another rinse and twist as the infectious and inspiring compositional graft lets its hair down. Known for his work with the folk-rock band Vamp, Odin Staveland is also a dab hand at screen and playwriting. He recently wrote, directed, and acted in the theatre play Mars. If he’s not at the Cannes Film Festival or directing stage performances, then he’s probably posing with nothing on but a hat and wondering if you’ll listen to his song. Here it is.

It begins with a snare roll then an abstract vocal that takes vocoder and Indian-sounding tones to new heights. The music starts, inkblot notes and sporadic harmony quiver within the verse. It’s got a vibe that feels like Bjork; however, the vocal is much dreamier and with a syrupy flow. A wave of new sounds then enters; a vibrant juxtaposition of instrumentation brings out a mosaic and jigsaw-like disjointedness that fits piece by piece in childish creativity. There’s genius within the playfulness; every note is chosen for its tonal perfection. Each instrument adds just the right colour and sensation as the lyrics depict poetic visuals lined with feeling. It’s a fascinating work, and it’s naked in a way I can recognise, sexy? Not quite, intimate? Very.
