Ecce Shnak
Katy’s Wart New York City Their 2025 rise in the indie art rock world has been nothing less than explosive; the NYC-based group Ecce Shnak invites intrigue and melodic introspection with a fantastic rhythm. The band released their long-anticipated Shadows Grow Fangs EP and then a subsequent live record to complete the experience. Next, they teamed up with DJ Eskei23 from Germany for a Kill ‘Em Mix of Jeremy, Utilitarian Sadboy. Then they met up with Madison Mars, the world-famous DJ, who made a remix of Prayer On Love. Both dancehall mixes took the floor like a natural and established the band even further in the field of sound exploration. To start the new year and to precede the release of the forthcoming record, Dandy Variances, Ecce Shnak present Katy’s Wart. There’s a radio friendly three and a bit minute version, and then a nearly ten-minute feature version that explores a story of bigotry and chauvinism with unpredictable consequences. Here’s what it sounds like. A massive heavy metal riff breaks open like a crate of beer and a floodlit stage set. The beat throbs like an engine keeping a vast airship afloat with the band’s name in black lettering along the side. The riff continues with a hardcore style evolution, palm-muted hardball rhythms crash into the surge of consistent drumming. The lyrics flow in a strange telephone message, or a preacher’s reading, we sit hypnotised by the abstraction that forms within the guitar, drawn in and tied to the beat. Craig’s List Jawn Nay! Yay! (live) Records, Man Records Taken from their Backroom Sessions EP, which cosies up with New York City quintet Ecce Shnak, Craig’s List Jawn Nay! Yay! Reveals new material to coincide with their upcoming tour. Playing alongside EMF and Spacehog, the artrock crowd on the West Coast will be treated to some seriously seductive and cerebral sound. The EP is a four-track snippet that also highlights performances of Jeremy. Utilitarian Sadboy (live), Prayer On Love (live), and Fight Song (live). The show was filmed for the band’s prominent YouTube channel, and the audio has been gifted to the listeners who just want the sounds. You can listen in your car. Perfected in the studio at New York’s Artroom by Jeff Lucci, mixed by Nicholas Vernhes, and mastered by Grammy-winner Joe LaPorta, enjoy this live moment captured for you. A rip of drums and distortion opens the track before a Zappa-esque vocal hits with wavering harmonies. The pulsations of music change as the drumming shifts with subtle instrumental jibs. A manic tapestry of mosaic abstraction spills colours and angles in flowing pours that settle in newly found inkblots of rock n roll. With the downturn, the mellowness of the song lifts and reveals pretty tunes and poetic nursery rhyme style lines that hypnotise and soothe. A flow of sound then washes over and reminds us of the other side of this group. Loud and noisy, with a dash of insanity. Shadows Grow Fangs New York City The time has come and New York City has a new EP from Ecce Shnak. Shadows Grow Fangs EP takes the five-piece band to the heights of the neon-tightrope and well into the gaping abyss. Thankfully they have a great sound and a fanbase worthy of an award so there’s no chance they’ll fall. It’s just exciting to watch as we know that most of us mere mortals wouldn’t stand a chance. They write from an intriguingly wide range of influences such as Bjork, Queen, and The Clash so we can always expect some tightly produced and experimental juxtapositions throughout their continuing canon. The record was recorded and produced at New York’s Art Farm by Jeff Lucci, mixed by Nicholas Vernhes, who worked with Deerhunter, Animal Collective, The Fiery Furnaces, and many more, plus it was mastered by Grammy winner Greg Calbi, putting Ecce Shnak on his long list of accolades already including John Lennon, David Bowie, Talking Heads, and Bruce Springsteen. As a moment in time and a flag in the ground to mark the achievement, the title track Shadows Grow Fangs has been made with a great live-action video that tells a story all of its own. A frantic funky syrup of strangeness and rock begins as the music takes control of the atmosphere. Strangeness is something we have to expect when listening to Ecce Shnak. A harmony of vocals begins the song in a meandering capture of monologue that evolves in time to the punky snare-driven drum riff that marches and zig-zag through emotional breaks and uplifting currents of abstract warmth. Mosaics of sectional composition link hand-in-hand through the avenues of drama and inventiveness with spiky bits and soft relaxations combining in a tessellation of awkward enjoyment. The Internet Records Man, Records Based in the world-famous New York City, the five-piece Ecce Shnak take care of the crowd with unusual and memorable music. Influenced by artists like King Crimson, Frank Zappa, and Ween, the coming together of many sounds in mathematically relevant ways can result in some fascinating and great sounding experiments. One such experiment is The Internet, this latest single taken from next month’s brand-new Shadows Grow Fangs EP. The EP has been recorded at New York’s Art Farm by Jeff Lucci, mixed by Nicholas Vernhes, and mastered by Grammy Award winner Greg Calbi. Written about a time-travelling poet who has to ask what the internet actually is, The Internet is a playful psychodrama played out to great sounding backdrops. Distorted television voices curdle along a glistening guitar that rises in amplitude. Chanting and choral singing then merges with drumming to deliver a multi-faceted surge of muse. Then, in a funky dig towards the disco, the music begins to pulse and chop in smoothly distorted bass and off-beat fills. The vocals are dramatic, a strangeness is layered into the delivery making the sound completely unique. A clever use of rhythmic fractions and layering bring out surprisingly fitting harmonies and fast corners of progression. Elements of classical merge seamlessly with punk and funk rhythms and voice, The Internet from Ecce Shnak is a crazy and fun circus of multi-dimensional talents.
