Fresh from the ripe and ready Montreal dance music sphere, the hugely talented Pete Philips makes his way to the front of the list with a splendid EP on You Plus One. The Echoes EP contains not only the original number, crafted with care by the Canadian creator, it also boasts two remix versions that completely change the font and colour of the piece. Before working on sounds that hold his own name, Philips was working under the moniker Poe (CA), so putting something different on the table can only mean there’s an extra level of ability and design on this new record. Melodic House DJs the world over need to get their decks stacked with this high-energy and outside the box romp through rhythm and rapture. With a style that’s been likened to a modern take on Depeche Mode and New Order and a long resume of experience with labels in Europe and at home, the multi-talented Philips is one to pay attention to.  
 
Bouncing bass rips into the silence with a tapping drum score that holds the poise. As the music swirls and crystalises, new layers of synthesiser launch into the space with gated and percussive tones. The harmonies of bass and treble hold the rhythm together with on-beat changes to the flow. New sounds build from the mix, sodden trumpet synths flatten into the verse as lyrics begin to make this extra special. Moody and inward-looking post-punk melodies mix with the 80s feel to wrap the sensations in warmth. The rhythms coalesce and rise to boiling points as the music climbs to new areas of intensity with the flow and dynamic of the progression.
