Long-term and loved, Manchester-born Chameleons return with their first new album in over 20 years. Called Arctic Moon, the record includes the new single Saviours Are A Dangerous Thing, plus a reworking of their 2024 single Where Are You? Fans can expect a lengthy work or two, album tracks that show the band’s more sit-down-side such as David Bowie Takes My Hand. Their sound has evolved over the years, what began in 1981 with a backdrop of post-punk, new-wave, and glam, now has matured into something much more up-to-date and resonant with today’s culture. The Chameleon may have changed its colours, but the eyes still look at you in the same way and it’s still on the same branch of the tree. When the Lord of the Flies means a constant free buffet, I guess Saviours Are A Dangerous Thing.

A flowing wave of guitar melody unravels as the vocal joins in short repeating lines. A drumbeat adds to the flow and the melody begins to chop and bounce along with the thud of the bass. The song begins as the first verse begins, an upbeat yet thoughtful note selection guides the words through passages of cinematic poetry. The sound of the 1980s remains with a sweet sense of freshness yet the song tones down the raw and vibrant. In its place is a masterful storytelling focus and melodies that evoke more than hair dye ever could. Maybe they still dye their hair, that would make sense.
