Musicality and intrigue create a moment of magic in the space between beginning and end, Denmark’s Hannah Schneider has just released In This Room, her meticulously crafted and expertly polished LP. Taken from the record is Membrane, the single utilizes elements of hip-hop in the rhythm to lay down a groove and atmosphere. With a bass clarinet providing the melody, a moody and orchestral element is revealed as her songwriting explores corridors so far undisturbed. Produced by her long-time collaborator Christian Balvig, who arranges the BBC Proms and is part of When Saints Go Machine, the piece concocts a seamless listening space for tranquillity and focus. As one half of the electronic duo AyOwA, Hannah Schneider is no stranger to airplay and media attention. With experience with BBC Radio and US big media, she is something of a monument already. The track begins with gusty bursts of bass clarinet; they trample down the dusty undergrowth like giant footsteps wading through the forest. Hannah Schneider begins, she whispers and sings in a musing and spiralling motion. It’s like trip-hop with the steady beats and brilliant vocal sections that offer dream and form. The music reels, strange sonics of organic glitch across woodwind stagger the rhythm like covering fire. Smooth, silken, and soulfully sumptuous, Membrane like muslin delicately covers the scene.
