A gothic darkwave phenomenon, Italy’s Christine Plays Viola are busy promoting their new album Fear Increases Violent Emotions, or simply F.I.V.E. The latest single from the record is the video track Desolate Moments. This new production was released just Friday with an exclusive premiere the day before. Now that the official business is done, I’ve been invited too. The song was written by band leader and guitarist Fabrizio Giampietro; their style captures elements of the darker Joy Division and Cure moments while exploring the vast underground depths of their genre. With enchanting baritone vocal lines and a heavy atmosphere of tension and device, their twenty-year career is still just as fresh as before. This is Desolate Moments on film.

A thumping pace merges gently with waves of abstract keyboard and guitar. The rhythm is gracefully calm yet insists on more to follow. A rising pace greets doubling up of the timing as the backbeat continues to pound. Vocals flow in, melodrama and tenacity; a piercing synth captivates as the voice lends an almost operatic spookiness. A drifting lead guitar churns with enchantment before the lyrics fall back into the front row. Forming in darkness and exploring the husks of broken chime, the music swirls on its silver sixpence and mesmerizes with its ruminative bars.
