Highlighting the vibrant alternative scene in San Diego’s LatinX community, the industrial darkwave trio Matte Blvck represent and entertain. Their new track is about breaking free from illusions. We might have our own and not even know it, testing reality and doubting first impressions are not always practical. It could be religion, propaganda, private fantasies, denial, excuses, or anything untrue or unhelpful, reality and imagination are the only two places we can explore. What is our soul? It’s the story and colour of our lives. If it’s based on fiction or fantasy, without a ground in the real, is our soul a lie? With a backdrop of heavy-duty electronica, energy manipulation that moves the stiffest corpse, on Breathing Records, it’s Soulless.  
 
A contagious bass pulse opens the music with an unignorable groove. It begins to span out in tone and waveform as the vocal begins. A smooth entry, it rises gracefully with a clean voice, angelic pitch, and a gathering storm beneath. The synths then open the floodgates, and the surge of rhythm, atmosphere, and melody washes over. Orchestrations of synth flow in conjoined currents of meandering mix, harmonies and tone contrasts feel their way forward as the vocal decorates and humanises everything we hear. It’s a mixture of gothic EBM and top ten chart that feels accessible, different, and adventurous.
