The hair-raising solo side project of Germany’s forefront goth-rocker Nino Sable, from the phenomenal Aeon Sable, Melanculia continues with Sunboat Ascension. Taking a page from the pre-Ziggy era Bowie style, a stripped-back acoustic rendering leaves a haunting charm folk sound that captures the imagination. The music also feels around in the dark for something like Nirvana Unplugged, and with a grunge prettiness stitched into the mix, it’s achieved with modern clarity. Finding a home with dark and foreboding twilight music, lighting the lantern of musical companionship, a mix of mysticism and magic completes the cauldron. Now we wait for the bang. The new album, post mortem, is coming out on the 15th, and this is the single. Watch the video now.

A sparkling pour of acoustic guitar teeters over the edge of reality as a spectral synthesiser adds layers of extra momentum. The gradual progression builds like natural phenomena, growing under the cover of darkness until a full song is in play. The vocals dream of imagery and feeling, loosely connected lines drift along ghostly backing tracks of wyrd and wonder. The mesmerism grabs the bottom end with sinking tones and deep bass harmonies and captures the top with ruminating poetry and emotional chord progressions. Post-punk attitudes lend a gloomy aspect while the folk and rock edge carries the piece beyond the obscure.
