They’ve only gone and covered the 1982 disco-bouncer Rising To The Top by the legendary Keni Burke. The American sextet Lettuce bring the good-time vibe with all the modern fandanglery we expect and enjoy. Lifting the spirits as August reaches its final act and the cool September skies begin to colour our supper time with purple, keeping the momentum going and living life like it's alive is best done with fantastic music. A fond love letter to the 1980s from all the way over here, brown matt photographs and hazy memories of half-forgotten personalities, there was so much going on in the music industry that continues to this day. The evolution of disco and RnB along the lines of rock n roll with a funky backdrop is one of those easy to track progressions from its humble roots in the dance hall. Lettuce are keen to propagate and sprout another taproot of class that can fruit again and again. Lined up to compliment the new album Cook, due this December, and a launch of Red Crush and Orange Crush wines, designed by the band themselves, it’s all systems go and harvest time. Let’s give ourselves a treat and put this song in your head for the day.

A sleek guitar fill begins to swagger along with sliding funk notes. Horns then join, trumpet sounds splurge across the riff in a foray of juicy tune. It settles, like a pan taken from the flame, and a smooth keyboard and drum score lends its energy. The guitars strum gently in the distance, twirling the wah sound around its finger like hair. Vocals begin, a laid-back sentimentality leans in. The melody pushes through, reminding us of how well we know this music without realising. A verse chorus backbone is decorated by layers of movement and harmony that reinvents itself each time it’s time to shine. It’s time to chill, lay back if you can, and remember the pause before you do anything at all.
