Taking simplicity to its purest form, Alan Young AKA Serious Child has invented a pop song that feels like a nursery rhyme. With a delicate thumb piano melody and only three progression chords for the whole piece, an easy to play, easy to remember feel permeates the production. He’s from a piece of West Sussex that’s home to an ancient woodland, and this tranquil setting, full of vintage stories tracing through to today, is what he identifies as his inspiration for becoming a musician. Featuring bass clarinet by Annie Perry and violin by David Grubb, First Tattoo takes us on an all too grown-up adventure with questions about doing what others are doing or listening to a different and quieter voice.

It bounces along with a quiet fortitude that knows where it’s going. The instruments climb through the melody and scramble across the nature littered floor, little boulders and clumps of grass gambol through the way as we move onward. The vocal begins, catchy and upbeat melodies shine in leaping verse lines, and we can move and sway to the slow-moving rhythm. It’s like a river moving through the woods, corners meander around tree stump and rockpile, and the song enjoys the freedom. Although the chords are simple, the band have ample room to explore and dive into the hedges in side-tracks of probing enquiry. It’s laid-back, fun, and full of musical choppiness that catches us on the dancefloor.
