From the early days, signed to Island Records, to the modern day with a 19-year-old son in tow, Jesse Hartman and Charlie Hartman reinvent the Laptop sound for the TikTok generation. A fresh influence of breezy musical talent comes through the generational corridor as Charlie adds more fundamental groove and inventiveness to Jesse’s veteran and polished sound. Laptop come through in colours like David Bowie and Ultravox, emotional and sentimental rock numbers that groove and move in equal measure. From Additional Animals, the album that’s due to be released later this year on Hurricane Cove Records, this is the psychedelic music video for Weirder.

A bongo-style rhythm opens with a flowful acoustic guitar. New sounds emerge; digital, synthetic, and brass all add their colour to the music. A drumkit joins in, pumping beats in a marching semble that punches in with soft pillow-fight-like beats. The lyrics repeat the phrase, it’s getting weirder and weirder, it sure is. This is only a short number, finishing just shy of two minutes long. I can see it being used in a TV show, possibly as a background song in a cafe somewhere. Just to set the scene. Clever stuff.
