Spirit Level Fruits de Mer Records For some of us, keeping a steady mind in the world is a full-time job. Staying calm, tranquil, grounded, and optimistic is a challenge that feels like a fight with a monster. If you lose, it can possess you like a demon and ruin your day. La Nuvelle Musique are back in formation and their new single Spirit Level is all about the inner work that some of us are exhausted by daily. It comes with a sparkly new debut album, self-titled, and back-to-back with psychedelic and all out artistic folk-rock stompers that reignite even the coldest imagination. The first new music since their EP, this single and album were recorded at Berwick Street Studios in London’s Soho district, the same studio that hosted Ultravox for their recording of Vienna and The Sex Pistols when they covered My Way. Reminding us to spend time in nature, slow down, and feel your way through reality with a positive compass, this is Spirit Level. Ocean sounds and delicate acoustic guitar introduce the music, accompanied by a haunting whistle that sets the atmospheric tone. Folk vocals begin; homely melodies launch into poetry and heartbeat as the sounds accumulate across the building song. Percussion gently enters, accompanied by rising tambourines and subtle tip-taps, as the guitar strumming grows. Then, a snare roll signifies the start of Act Two. A harmony breezes in like gusts of fresh spring air, pollens and petals rising on the currents as they brush past your hair. A settling down section begins, revealing the story in abstract beauty, and then the song recaptures the fire and begins to run along the shore with exciting bounds.
