Make a date for the 9th of May, that’s the day when the new Peter Murphy album Silver Shade is released. But first, we can enjoy the next single from the record. Since featuring Boy George in a duet with his previous Let The Flowers Grow, this new album takes the post-punk permanent to the next level. Fans have already been given Swoon, the first track since that memorable experience, and now The Artroom Wonder is here to continue the story. Written about Peter’s experience with former Bauhaus bandmate Daniel Ash, as senior school students they once sneaked into the 6th form common room which served as the art classroom and heard the most incredible music. Continuing the theme of guest musicians, for The Artroom Wonder it’s the turn of Tool bassist Justin Chancellor. This time it’s Murphy and company who get to be the cool kids playing the incredible music. Let’s sneak in.

A retro synth enters with a catchy bass tone, it creates an upbeat rhythm with a sludgy sensation. Then a drumbeat joins the current and adds a bit of voltage. A marching beat that’s a bit faster than a casual walk takes us on and into an adventurism of sound. Peter Murphy begins; his voice captures everything we love about the genre. As the verse viscously moves onward the music simmers and then boils with harmony and melodic additions. The vocal ats like a bass tone in the flow as the synthesiser catches the feel and flings the families of tone into the sky. With a creativity and picturesque lyrical inventiveness, we’re drawn into this mysterious and fascinating world of the artroom. Kindled from dreams, based on experience, matured in the cellar of the mind, and expressed through song, a potent number indeed.
