Drifting in the realm between serendipitous profusity and enchanting vocal coordination, the Oxford-based chamber-pop outfit Blue Bayou return with Carousel Song. Drawing on images of tall Bakelite horses with proud unmoving expressions, coated children drawn from every corner holding on to the golden spiral rails, the symbolism reaches way beyond the mechanical bells and organ. They’ve only just got through the door from a run of festivals and a tour, with support and headline slots in dozens of venues. Produced by Chris Barker, the latest track made use of proper tape-recording like in the old days, with all the glow and hum of the old-fashioned technology in place. Creating an ethereal atmosphere to complement their euphonic arrangements, let’s see what Carousel Song brings round from the dark side.

It begins with ambience, something like a frog croak breaks the quiet. Then, a shiny acoustic guitar begins to shimmer and flow. Pink Floyd like vocals then open, adorning the familiar hum with a melancholy yet hopeful tone. More instruments enter; strings, bells, and bass all gracefully join the dance and begin moving in absolute time. A violin takes the lead, mirroring the vocal with harmonic flow that elevates the feeling. Deep resonant vocals from the male voice sit beneath flowing and gentle female voices that decorate the tune in all the right places. Homely, moving, and full of pleasant imagery, Carousel Song brings us peace and romance.
