Linking sounds from the hub of Los Angeles and San Diego, the California-based Distressor bring a brutal edge to shoegaze that puts steel toecaps on heavy boots. Stare at those and feel their heaviness as the emo metal twist hits home with their ruckus inspiring soundtrack sound. Their latest track is Broken Glass and it’s shattering musically as well as lyrically. Crunching elements glisten with facets of jagged feeling. They formed in 2017 with a passion for the early 2000s heavy rock sound that no-doubt framed chapters of formative memories. Evolving a sound to fit the modern listener and their maturing children requires talent as well as the love so it’s a good job that Distressor have barrowfuls of the stuff. Here is Broken Glass.

It cracks open like an egg with a huge snare and kick drum. Massive guitars then crash down from on high with soaring pressure that swirls and gasps with progressive melody. A graceful power hits with the drumming, the tempo isn’t fast but there are lots of beats in the bar which gives the impression of long-distance running or slow-motion observation. The vocal sinks in like a ghost over an empty table, lifted by forces not understood, the emotion follows with punches and memorable handholds that encapsulate mysterious emotion. The music continues to build and evolve as the guitars continue where the vocal leaves off, manifesting more feelings with choice notes and dynamic motions. It’s got passion, power, and prowess. Everything we need.
