Combining freshly exported Brit-pop from back in the UK with a vibrant psychedelic folk rock sparkle, Sicilian groovers Messiness present a new album and single. Cómo Baja, Cómo Sube features on their debut and self-titled record. It’s been entirely recorded on analogue gear, and that means we get a traditional glow within the record that’s usually gently teased away by compressors and modulated wave-crushers. Do we want that? It totally depends on if the band is looking for a traditional band sound or not. Messiness want to capture every nuance and each vibration in meticulous detail. With lyrical content that explores modern living and the paradoxes we often have to live out, and musical competency beyond the everyday, the contradiction of Messiness is complete. A wave of instruments bubbles up and fills out into layers of dreamy rhythm. The vocal falls into place, it’s like Babylon Zoo, cerebral effects fling the sound into digital flurries while steady rock sounds keep the time. A dancing pace allows the music to move slowly through its paces; each band member offers unique dimensions as bass and guitar play into Mellotron sections. There’s a Flaming Lips sensibility, perhaps Yoshimi loves this band, I’d not be surprised. A fantastic adventure unravels with each passageway of sound; there’s a lot going on for a 3-minute song. It’s progressive rock with a familiar Geezer feel that entertains with ample quality.
