A rock opera that makes use of rap and retro sounds to complete the scene, Sandy And Jean by Rosemarry Schonfeld explores the difficult landscape for lesbian people in 1980s Britain. The album focuses on two mums who fall in love at a mother and toddlers’ club. When one of them is married to a man and the other is a teacher, stresses begin to form. At first the husband is okay with it and willing to accept a progressive relationship but soon he wants to be in charge again. Sandy can’t divorce him because of a law called section 28. Until well into the 1990s, it stated that a mother loses custody of their child if they leave a marriage for a lesbian relationship. Jean is also in a pickle, as she desperately wants to make things official with the love of her life, her work life would have to come to an end. In those days lesbian schoolteachers were seen as a risk towards the development of young children. These homophobic and privately intrusive laws made life difficult for women up and down the nation. This single Chorus Of Friends And Jean highlights the album, which in turn is produced to pay respects to everyone who suffered unfairly during this backward time.

A be-bop style keyboard melody brings out the flavours of the time with quirky key changes and bubbly motifs perking the ears. A chorus of vocal then washes over with harmonised words singing like a quartet. Rebecca enters with chanting up close to replace her wafts of mesmerising musicality. A juxtaposition of forlorn and experimental upbeat sounds flows through intellectual filters of serenade and uncertainty. A strange and odd sensation flummoxes through the piece like a bewildered child making their own way home. The album is bound to be an adventure; can you make it to the final stage?
