From Closer Than They Appear
An intriguing and inspiring covers album that introduces a run of brilliant compositions is on its way. Closer Than They Appear by Tod Lippy takes the reins on some favourite numbers and some lesser-known but equally as vital pieces of music. The album as a whole considers tracks by artists like Low, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Beth Gibbons, and Bedhead among several more. Lippy also includes a version of Frightened Rabbit's unreleased track Son C. This one found its way to a music release offered with the 13th edition of ESOPUS, an arts magazine headed up by Lippy between 2003 and 2018. With the single Time now out and about, fans and newcomers alike can introduce themselves to the alternative direction on offer from Tod Lippy. An adjacent version of the 1981 classic from the Alan Parsons Project, Time reveals a designer edge and artistic reflection to the well-loved original.
Strange synthesisers rumble and spiral with accumulating sound. Bass grows from the abstract with pulsing fields of sound. Vocal enters, smooth and introspective lines mingle with the oddness and beauty that radiates from the music. More melody rises in the central area as the verse draws back for a moment, meaningful swipes of lush and organic sound snugly fit together like pieces of curious jigsaw. Then, a thrust of pressure releases a burst of vocal that reaches into the high as the lyrics push the expression further on. The music tidally glides through ever further horizons as choice instruments bring distances closer through magnified emotions.
