Tacoma, Washington State, not that far from Seattle, and the scene has gone goth. A new video and tune from the electro-wave post-punk Licorice Chamber is now blackening the airwaves. As they pack their gear and head out for a tour of the West Coast, Licorice Chamber present Heavy. A song about the inner weight of trauma, guilt, resentment, and unanswered questions, Heavy expresses the undeniable downward pressure of our own narrative. Like a heavy stone balanced on the frame of a glass ceiling, one slight nudge could cause the whole thing to shatter. Fronted by the enigmatic and bewitching Layla Reyna, the 4-piece uses all the power of theatre and dark romance to shade in life’s contours.

A torrent of synth and guitar washes over a crack of drums as the rhythm surges onward. A hot lead guitar then climbs up and begins to spread sonic colour across the sky, all the way to the horizon. The chug of bass matches the rhythm guitar that glitters with a deeply silver sheen. As the verse takes hold, the vocal dreams into being with moody and attention-grabbing lines of sentiment and descriptor. The music boils up for the chorus; heavy guitars rage upward and lift the entire piece in topography. The gothic feel rings true throughout; a shaded greyscale of emotion greets poetic imagery that punches in symbolism. Doomy and dirge-like, the miserable feelings play nicely with the sense of adventure, provided the storyline is heavy enough. That it is.
