An embarrassing moment for me at school one day when the chemistry teacher asked a question and then hinted “the man from Delmonte says?” and I didn’t know. A friend across the desk whispered “yes”. And I said it, having no idea what I was confirming. Give me physics formulae and I’ll be fine. Manchester band The Man From Delmonte say yes to quality indie tunes and after 35 years since their last release, they’ve gone and said it again with a brand-new album. It’s out tomorrow. The single from the record is Every Time, followed by the B-side Drive Drive Drive (Live). It’s their first ever single performed at their sell out Academy gig last October. This latest number was written earlier in the year, just before the summer. A comparison perhaps, the new and modern single with all the experience behind it against the first composition, played for the umpteenth time with as much enjoyment and skill as ever. Will you be listening? Every Time.

A feel-good 90s style guitar riff opens the tune. Are we listening to brit-pop again after all these years? I think we are. The vocals begin, folky, accented, and well-spoken, the lyrics are easy to hear, learn, and eventually join in with. A bouncy rhythm maintains the upbeat sense as the words begin to dip into the pot of wistful romance, we fall into the ink and begin to paint with footsteps, clamber marks, and dancing moves splatter. A trumpet section takes us by surprise, a musical break that takes the edge away as the guitar muffles itself against the colour of muted brass. Then, boom, the rhythm kicks in and we start jumping. Happy days.
