A keen musician, Mathis Akengin’s track First Floor has nearly surpassed the 600,000 streams milestone. Never previously released in the UK, it is a taste of the forthcoming album. From his first band membership, one half of the musical duo Catfish as a teenager, to being a sought-after and versatile musician who can produce sounds and melodies fitting for anything from rock music to soul. The output of this prolific and prominent pianist is always worth your time, the mood and the rhythm find unique places under his fingers. Let’s hear the new song.

A playful and upbeat melody begins the piece; rumbling drums keep the time as buoyant piano tone frolic in the sunshine. Deep and high notes work their magic in a two-handed flurry of expression. The vocal is jazzy, soulful, and has a pop energy that makes it bounce. Extra instruments fill unusual spaces with harmony and extra tone, the minimal sense of piano and drum meets voice with a marching pace and a smile. It feels like we’re heading for the beach, packing our bags, choosing which brightly coloured shirts we want to wear. Soundtrack stuff.
