The darkwave alternative duo from Chicago have been pulling Metal out of the hat at their live shows for a while now. The Gary Numan track is a splendid addition to the vibe with the artist’s gothic industrial image feeling right at home in the city of big shoulders. Releasing the track as a new single gives everyone the chance to enjoy the [melter] version anytime they like. With their own twist on the music and an alternative delivery from frontwoman Jax Allos, Metal gets a new cutting-edge facet with this modern take on the 1979 classic. The music gets the proper treatment at every stage, having become second nature to the band, then mixed and mastered byWilliam Faith at 13 Studio. It also gets a neat video that combines live footage from Rishi Productions and Video Waste which captures the energy the song delivers when it gets rolled out at their mind-bending shows. Rhythmic synths begin the melody. The familiar tune reaches in with digital vibrancy and robotic sensations. A symphony of instrumentation then collapses down with harmonious bass end and trippy drums that splatter and thump. The vocals begin, telephone distortion curdles the voice as the lines spill one by one. The synths merge with the lyrics to elevate and fill their emotional relevancy. Computer sounds and fizzy bandwidth distortion leaves us feeling like it’s 1995 and we’re picking up radio from the next city across. A swirling mass of sounds continues to throb and evolve within the familiar framework of the song. Bouncing rhythms and surging synths offer a lush and ethereal lights-out journey.
