Syncopated Offbeats And Verdant Brass Bring Controls To Extremes With Cassius Wolf and Das Abs.9/6/2026
Cassius Wolf and Das Abs
Controls To Extremes Liverpool One of the original sounds of the post-punk movement, formed in 1978 at Liverpool’s legendary Eric’s club, Cassius Wolf and Das Abs continue the thread with even more twist. They’ve resurfaced with a fresh batch of recordings seeded by a host of lost cassettes and studio sessions. Reimagining the material, the duo set about rerecording the tracks with extra motivation and experience. Rekindling the spark of youth and celebrating a sense of inventiveness that has undoubtedly evolved into further chapters, Cassius Wolf and Das Abs present An Afternoon In Bedlam. The album is named after the defunct British institution where the insane were kept under lock and key. From the record, with a UK roots reggae garnish, this is Controls To Extremes. A strict and resonant drum hits out at the silence before a bass and trumpet adds the necessary groove. Rhythm snakes over the groundwork as the guitars jam on the offbeat and the bass wanders in melodious scales. Alto sax or something similar joins in as the vocals colour the scenery. A Jamaican vibe leans in with yellow and red while the Liverpool silver simmers with raincloud presence. A laid-back and chewy backbeat allows a story to unfold; poetic lyrics and musical inflections build a settling scene. pMad
NineFortyFive County Galway Modern variation on post-punk and abstracted grooves, with influences as wide as Echo and the Bunnymen, The The, The Cure, and Depeche Mode, Ireland’s pMad is as unique as they get. A kind of grindcore funk with acid-bent beats and philosophical musings; his music sets a tone and a scene like none other. He has an album out, called 1+1=-1, and it’s only available as a product from Bandcamp. The sites who stream on the other hand get the single treatment, one at a time, and as and when pMad decides. He’s only gone and done it again, with NineFortyFive. The new single takes a more insisting and foreboding aura than usual, how is that even possible? We had better find out. A chunky blues style guitar begins the rhythm, and a cymbal-snare beat kicks in immediately. The voice of pMad enters and adds a classy swagger that has a groovy confidence that blends with a gloomy condolence in a steange swirl of emotion. The music carries on with progressive phrases, lead guitar wails and licks over the bounce of bass and rock kit drumming. It’s got a serious catchiness that collapses any sense of strange, while retaining the quality of obscurity we know and love from pMad. A mash of bass, guitar, synth sounds, and ghostly vocals lends an eerie sense of goth while livening the atmosphere with upbeat sensations. Schkeuditzer Kreuz
Keep Dancing – Fresh Graves Mix Australia The gloomy underworld of synth-crust and electronic industrial abstraction is given another landmark with the latest output from Australia’s Schkeuditzer Kreuz. Showcased at the recent release party in Sydney, with Tokyo’s Anti Itch Cream also on the bill, the 7’’ vinyl record contains the A-side plus Poor Impulse Control – Three Days Deep on the B. Both singles are the follow up material from last year’s Swan Grinder LP, having been given the remix treatment to offer new dimensions. Keep Dancing was rerecorded with guitars this time, the drums and synths were overdubbed too, with a greater sense of drive. As the music came to light, Schkeuditzer Kreuz announced a 19-date tour of Asia in the following months. With dates confirmed in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, and Japan this October. You won’t have heard anything quite like this until you have, Schkeuditzer Kreuz isn’t shy of being completely out of the boundary. This is the Fresh Graves Mix of Keep Dancing. Strange sounds rise in amplitude until a frantic drumming begins. It’s fast, intense, and carries a sense of utter urgency. The bass rumbles beneath as high-end stabs twang and jab with poignant tempo. Schkeuditzer Kreuz begins to vocalise, it’s not singing, it’s not growling, it’s throaty and guttural, like The Exorcist film, but a grown man. Terrifying stuff, the pounding rhythms overlap and concrete together in a continual stream of digital consciousness. The rhythmic heavy metal digi-core sound pushes through any boundary we have put around it and colours the entire horizon with impetus and obscurity. Jason Piccioni
Cupid In The Sky New York The son of Piero Piccioni, a famous Italian music composer, and actress Gloria Paul, Jason grew up in the high-class world of Italian culture and entertainment. Music and feeling became his life, and this aspect of reality never left him. First moving to England, where Jason Piccioni studied at university, he eventually settled in New York where he embarked on an electronic music and house career. Producing music under the moniker of Electric J, Piccioni established himself as a reputable producer of dancefloor vibes. When his father died a few years ago, he inherited a huge catalogue of scores, recordings, and manuscripts. This became his new-found life work, as the resource needed remastering and remarketing for a modern age. That was until now, by fully acknowledging his family name and starting anew, Jason Piccioni presents two full albums. Cupid In The Sky takes a jazz journey through emotions and artistic movements of music, whereas Piero Piccioni Revibed is a modern and fresh variation album of his late father’s work. With contracts under Universal and WEA, a subsidiary of Warner, and with collaboration credits for people like Kylie Minogue and Eumir Deodato, Jason brings his superstar quality wherever he goes. The title track Cupid In The Sky has a radio edit, featuring orchestra 014; the cinematic nu-jazz offering captures something immortal. A lush gust of brass fills the void before the band kicks in with a smooth walking pace groove. The drums slosh and tap with a thud of bass harmonising with the guitar. It’s a percussion wonderland as the orchestra envelopes the chattery rhythms. A funk driven vocal glides through, harmonies and tingling scale manoeuvres recast the classic old-time feel with a newfound brilliance. An upbeat energy creeps in, the walk turns to a run, while the cymbals begin to fill the spaces between the lines with vibrant colour. It climbs in intensity, the melody continuing like a hypnotic whirl, and the elastic tightness only gets more snap as the bars continue. You can follow Jason Piccioni on Instagram
DEATĦ B¥ LØVE
Cosmic Power Distortion Productions The international electro-goth duo DEATĦ B¥ LØVE have revealed their spine-tingling carnival of an album 444 on CD. It’s a semblance of sounds that range from post-punk, rock, and alternative electronica. Keeping tradition alive by producing physical media, the band is ensuring that music remains real with something to hold in your hands. Taken from the album is their latest single Cosmic Power. The video takes us on a visual and sonic adventure through the medium of their seductive and soul-moving song. Comprised of Peter Guellard, who’s known for working with The Electric Hellfire Club, Blitzkrieg, and Closterkeller, plus Inga Habiba, who has a long and illustrious career in Poland’s goth scene, DEATĦ B¥ LØVE warps the shape of reality with a parallel purpose. A smooth and laid-back sample and trumpet call out before a hip-hop style rhythm hits the ground. The drumming motivates the imagination; it speaks with a character that captures the scene. The synths build and bubble up as Inga thrusts her voice from angelic beauty to powerful projection. Harmonising notes drift gently in the air as the drums carve out valleys through the soft and malleable future. Fizzing sounds and curving tones tesselate and tread across the twilight undergrowth as the song progresses. Nocturnal feelings form and introspection inquires at the front of the mind.
