Last Train
One By One Lyon They’re on stage tonight at London’s The Grace, and again on the 16th at The Great Escape in Brighton. Lyon’s Last Train offer a heavy sound that could easily compete with one of those loud engines rumbling by. They’ve been around since before 2010, when the French fourpiece embarked on a continuation of their hard rock and intellectual genre. Having toured with groups such as Placebo and Muse, Last Train have just released their latest album III. The new single is One by One, and like the rest of the record, was recorded in a spooky, crumbling chateaux. The venue offers an ideal setting for their noisy and electric sound, putting space and architecture together in production and practice. Enjoy. Thumping drums with cracking snare begin to hammer out the shape of the song, the rhythm manifests across rolling toms and bass kick. Vocals begin, a voice that feels at home next door to the Smashing Pumpkins or even Alice In Chains reaches out and shows us what the band are all about. Guitars and bass then add the final layer to the mixture, vibration and distortion work together with feedback framed harmonies and licks that sail alongside the solo voice that carries the weight of a choir. It’s more than heavy rock, it’s a kind of post-grunge for the international stage. Get the album in. You can follow Last Train on Instagram and X ![]()
ChumHuffer
Ways DWY Records With a brand new 7’’ record doing the business, the New York sharkcore punks ChumHuffer present the single. Ways brings the noise and the energy into a pinpoint injection of attitude and rebellion for everyone looking to have the mould broken into a thousand bits. The band are renowned for their hard-hitting style and no nonsense artform that shakes the bones and rattles the mind. The new Slaughterhouse Five record is another self-released gem that makes the scene on their home-grown DWY Records. Naturally, the EP contains 5 brutal tracks, which will be performed on 22nd June at Bowery Electric in New York. First, we can go through Ways. A groovy guitar riff strides out with that classic drawn-out melody accompanied by ferocious beats. Before we’re taken down the road with Crowbar, the attitude peaks and shifts gear as the drumming doubles up and the vocals begin. A punk and thrash forward momentum catches the current and soars out on frantic guitar and bass that feels like a pneumatic drill. The jackhammer of jagged blues licks and heavy crunch chords that leap from bar to bar, fret to fret, matches up with a persistent and loud sing-along deviance we can attempt to get right. Ships In The Night
No One Is Coming Metropolis Records There’s something about Ships In The Night that makes you sit up and pay attention. Is it the basic instinct or would it be a complex desire? The magical and mythological new album Protection Spells is ready for you today, with No One Is Coming showing up as a radio-length number from the record. An enchanting and evocative creative project of the jaw-dropping Alethea Leventhal, the singer songwriter and performance artist is now on album number three. It’s a magic number, prime time for your ears, and if you’ve got an hour to vanish into, there’s a whole record ready to dive through. A shimmering synth string ensemble begins the sound as bass levers itself in with a push-up motion from the depths. New motions of melody enter, entrancing and dancing, and the vocal begins. Alethea has a sultry and close-in delivery, her harmonies and melodics sit gracefully on stems of long grass buffeted by mystical winds and fairy seeds floating among the rays of dusty light. Bass and synth lap over a rocky riverbank of drumming and emotion, the slow and moving grace of the song slides over the mind like silken shades of feeling and introverted poetry. Let’s come to our senses and put the album on. You can follow Ships In The Night on Facebook and Instagram ![]()
Tian Qiyi
Watch The Sunrise Pagoda Records Reeling in the quality and depth of eastern musical tradition and presenting it with all the modern craft of the west, UK fusion act Tian Qiyi invite us to Watch The Sunrise. Taken from their new album Music For Workers, this single showcases the soon-to-be-released sophomore record. It seems that the nation has been hungry for the flavours of oriental tradition, Tian Qiyi have been given premium airtime from the likes of Stuart Maconie, Gideon Coe, Mark Riley, and John Kennedy. They bring in influences ranging from the momentous Miles Davies to the casual and creative Kula Shaker via classics like Cornershop and The Stone Roses. With an intriguing mix of genre blending experimental expeditionary tracks, June 28th will reveal the full extent of the new record which features their talented father, Jah Wobble. In the meantime, we can sit back, enjoy the spring months, and Watch The Sunrise over and over. An ethnic steel string melody begins; fast notes trill in between ambient atmospheres. A curtain of bass then draws across the stage depicting intricate emotions and powerful feelings. A musicality of high drama manifests through the curdling of tone and mesmerism with vocals following the bass line and drawing in peculiar harmonies through the mysterious scales. Classical and modern elements sit atop poetic explorations of scene and motif as the snaking and mysterious tune evolves and pushes on through the deepening thicks. An adventure with a subtle hypnotism, we’re left wondering where to go next. There’s a debut album to enjoy before Music For Workers appears in June. Save Ferris
Get Dancing California Fronted by the iconic and delectable Monique Powell, the upbeat and in-your-face ska and dance beat band Save Ferris are touring their new material. They’ve got a killer reputation for providing one of the most energetic and mind inspiring shows out there, dazzling the crowds with vibrant horns and crazy rock musicians all stitched together by a pin-up girl on the vocals. Get Dancing is a call to action for all the music fans and gig goers who love a bit of Save Ferris, a bit of ska, and a lot of happy noise. The bass and organ dive in, bumping the tones of rhythmic melody in a slow and left to right swagger that moves. Monique begins, her reggae infused delivery hits the elocution with a laid-back cool breeziness that tickles the sweat beads forming on the brow. The trumpets and the guitars lean in and out with their harmonising dictations while the keyboard bubbles away like a cauldron of steaming clarity. Teen Creeps
No Show Ghent It’s been four long years since their last album, Forever. The Belgian independent rock group Teen Creeps have become household names across their fanbase, so they surely wanted to get the next one just right. With a new single out now, No Show takes the evocative and passionate punky rock speed machine to another level of associative awesomeness. Known for the fuzzy effects and rampant drumming, a psychedelic and cerebral sound pushes in the casual formula and reinvents nostalgia all over again. The new album, Today Is The Day, is written in for the 5th of September, so this new number is going to keep showing up in the playlist until its companions get their shoes on. Tie your laces, tuck your shirt in, and show up anyway. This is No Show. It bumps up the atmosphere with an immediate bass and guitar punch that’s framed by an excellent, glistening drum-score. Intricate beats hit the strums and the bass walks on pin-point accuracy, like Swiss watches, the music is instantly recognisable as made by professional, quality musicians. So often, punk sounds loose and slightly out of tune Not this time, we get a real sense of respect for the craft you don’t always find with this kind of energy. A vocal line with a classic melody adds the perfect topping to the layer-cake of riff, drum, mastery, and attitude. Effects create a spongy reverb on the voice and the lead guitar that gives in to a 70s haze that’s lifted into the modern day by the sheer brilliance of the production. An early Motorhead element is there, ready to bring that ruckus into your headspace any time you please. You can follow Teen Creeps on Instagram and Tumblr Get music by Teen Creeps on Bandcamp |
