The Speed Of Sound
Underground Big Stir Records In a celebration of 35 exciting years of The Speed Of Sound, the Manchester-based quintet embarked on a ground-breaking trilogy album that signifies their entire curve and provides ample runway for the next instalment. Now on the second chapter, A Cornucopia: Victory, The Speed Of Sound present their new single that precedes the anticipated release. With Minerva behind us, as the highly acclaimed chapter one, Victory at our feet, and Bounty on the horizon, it’s a genuinely great time to get on the train and enlist as a fan of this sparkling wine of a group. Underground is a real scene setter for the album release, due in September, with aspects of influences such as Blondie, Television, Jefferson Airplane, and the B-52s adding their chemistry to the cauldron of this northern powerhouse group. A funky high-hat and snare driven drum score unwraps the song as a volley of twinkling guitar chords and bass tones bring a sunny and upbeat groove. A quick rhythm punches the framework in a barrage of upbeat strides. The vocals begin, wavery guitars begin to radiate with interesting chord shapes as a Bob Dylan style delivery meets Shampoo swagger in a hair wash shower scene of sound. A mix of blues guitar, upbeat punky rhythms and a trad-folk sing-along recipe makes The Speed Of Sound’s Underground infectious and inspiring. The Speed Of Sound Charlotte (12” Version) Manchester Inspired by the timeless and avant-garde creations of Charlotte Bronte and a true-life story from her life in the 1850s, Manchester’s The Speed Of Sound bring Charlotte the song. Issued as a second track on their double-A single, Virtual Reality 123 / Charlotte, this memorable in memoriam was first performed live in Elizabeth Gaskell’s actual house. This is the same venue that Jane Eyre author Charlotte Bronte herself once hid behind a curtain, so she didn’t have to entertain a guest. Gaskell went so far as to write a biography of her friend that is still available today. Billed to mark the writer’s 200th birthday, the band’s extended edition adds another layer of atmosphere and poignancy to the fugacious nature of this remarkable artist of yore. The music begins with sound effects, we sit close and listen. Drums then begin with a tribal feel as tom-toms bash a rhythmic dirge. A vocal begins to snake over the beats, melody without words begins to draw in the mists as the music rises to meet the pattern. Another voice adds yet more momentum to the flux as guitars begin to fall into place. Then, a burst of gain and drums unveils a powerful vibrancy that pushes everything forward. A gloomy and ghostly atmosphere builds within the track, odd harmonies and sombre elocution reveal tentative sensations in the river of sound. A smash of chorus once more brings a frantic moment before more mysterious and ethereal vibes continue the build. Charlotte ends on an uplifting bash of dream and rock n roll that spirals with ever-moving vapours of a cherished history.
