Since the critically-acclaimed New Gods LP that surfaced and shone back in 2014 on Slumberland Records, Scotland-based Withered Hand has delivered once again. How To Love LP is out on Reveal Records as of the 28th of April. Before we get to that, the Londoner turned Scot has written and recorded Waking Up. Filmed in Edinburgh, the new video and song has been edited with Mark Freegard (Pale Saints, Lush, The Breeders, New Model Army, Del Amitri). The whole album was produced by Tony Doogan, who’s worked alongside artists like Mogwai, Teenage Fanclub, Belle and Sebastian, David Byrne, The Twilight Sad, and The Delgados. For one man and his musical ability, Withered Hand seems to carry the weight of a whole band all on his own.
Rolling hills of blues and organ span out from the origin. The music settles down to give space for Withered Hand to sing. The vocals hit like classic rock, elements of Rod Steward and Van Morrison hang gentle in the style of delivery. As guitar leads the song with flashy licks and rocking chord progressions, other instruments leap forward in bursts of colour. The drums pound a memorable and story-like rhythm as shifting beats and plenty of breaks keep the focus sharp.
