Not Your Angel
Drawing a line through the angelic stereotype of graceful, sweet, and delicate, Ruth Blake presents her latest single. It’s almost certain if angels were real, they’d sometimes be frightening and difficult to get along with, we’re only human after-all. True beauty doesn’t always come from the image of angelic goodness and Ruth Blake wants to make it clear she is not your angel. A messenger none-the-less, her song makes us look at the commercialisation of character and acceptability that we’re often told is the only way. Made in collaboration with the renowned James Yuill, a producer who’s worked with the likes of Mint Royale, Au Revoir Simone, Erasure, and M83.
A sonic drill bores into the room with guitar lead that vibrates with dirty distortion. Ruth Blake enters with sultry vocals, synth bass and reverberating drums join in to sweep the energy in clear directions. Melody folds around Blake’s voice as the chorus rises in pitch and emotion. Sing-a-long sections hit with the vibrating atmosphere of heavy bass and thrilled blues guitar. A dynamic and inventive edge maintains a sharp cutting-edge through interesting sound with new inflections and musical inputs that continue the fresh composition.
