What Do Whales Dream About At Night? New York City The lead track from her beautiful new album, What Do Whales Dream About At Night, was inspired by a poem by Ukrainian writer Serhiy Zhadan called Headphones. Regular readers might remember when Sound Read Six featured Great White Shark not so long ago. This new single accompanies the album release and gives people a gateway into her music with a great radio-suited composition. With drummer Brian Griffin, who's known for work with Lana Del Rey, Brandi Carlisle, and Patti Smith, Whynot Jansveld on the bass, the band is completed by LA producer Naren Rauch on guitar and Musicamiba's Nathan Schram. Run by Jessie and Nathan, Musicambia bring music and performance art to prisons in the USA. The entire album is brought to larger than life by Adam Lasus and Charlie Nieland in the studio. Following on from her stylish and talented acting career, in which Jessie Kilguss found herself performing alongside Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Rider, adapting her stage presence to music seems a perfect fit for the future. The haunting sound of the harmonium opens the song as Jessie sings her primary lines to the strumming of a gentle guitar. A meandering story of tone and imagination unravels as the music begins to chop with swift chords that take on a folk sensibility. Bass and drums bring the flow forward as keyboards form raindrop like inflections over the bars. Another gear-change brings a cantering flow to the song as the new verse rises like a sun on the horizon. The familiar chorus returns to ask the same question over and over, like our own minds musing on the seemingly unreachable. We can dream and imagine those of the whales.
