Formerly known as The Jacques, the band renamed themselves after the death of their teammate and friend Will. The loss of the bassist changed their sound forever and the compendium of composers felt it appropriate to start anew. Having toured with The Libertines, performed at Glastonbury, and been highlighted by the BBC, the group of friends who once lived in a shared accommodation have reached the mighty heights of established musicianship. This debut single on their own record label takes the group to a new era of Brit-pop infused alternative rock that pushes all the right buttons up and down the nation. Taken from the name of a poem and song by John Cooper Clarke about a guy who’s always on the take, it’s ironic that it doesn’t take a lot to get into their new and matured sound.
A bump of drums leans into uplifting guitar. We get treated to a roadway of rhythm and vocal that feels like a good friend. Woah, adult language! That’s ok, the song just relaxes into the breezy progression with forthcoming chords and motivating melodies. A streetwise sense of knowledge sits comfortably in the delivery as the upbeat major scales and bluesy breakdowns keep us travelling with entertaining and captivating music. It’s as if we’ve been listening to It Man for years, brand new and right at home, we can be sure there’s more to come.
