Burr Island
Towers Devon The alt-rock independent West Country stage maestros are back with another 60s influenced swinging single that sits head and shoulders over the corn. The band have recently enjoyed huge support from the BBC with airplay and mentions across Radio 6, Radio 2, and Gaby Roslin’s Radio London show. Their new single Towers enjoyed radio play on Radio X for the premiere with a media slot in Shindig Magazine to offer the goods. Now it’s a short few weeks until their set of dates supporting Ocean Colour Scene on tour, and with their own shows scheduled to match, Burr Island hit us with this anti-capitalist number. So, don't be cheap, buy your copies of the song. Also, if you happen to like what this journal does, turn off the adblock, reward your blogger. No one likes a capitalist freeloader. Seriously though, we can all pay our own way and a little bit forward as well but it’s the filthy rich who need a good scrub down with proverbial ammonia. Gentle and sombre acoustic guitar opens out like a Bert Jansch piece as melody and progression work together to unravel a mood. Delicate vocals join in a duet of uplifting yet thoughtful verse lines. A gaze of temperance passes by until the music leaps to a celebratory yet warning chorus where the flowers are dying. What could they represent? A short number with a prettiness to be enjoyed, the deeper message is one of care and the lack of it. Towers from Burr Island takes us to the roots of British folk via a range of modern influences. English Roses West Country Since their recent high-flying release Nunney Town, West Country duo Burr Island return with English Roses. A rock n roll staple with a classic feel already, their previous track was snapped up by BBC Radio 2. Recorded at Devon’s Kundalini Studio and produced by Steve Cradock, the same from Ocean Colour Scene Paul Weller, and The Specials credit, this new offering takes a more political edge. The band delve into the xenophobia that they found while growing up in small towns. Other cultures lead to other behaviours, and these can be signals for our subconscious mind to be aware. This is natural and probably useful but treating people differently because of where they’re from is how tensions are fostered. When stranger danger becomes stranger degradation then the scene is set for disaster. If people are genuinely anxious of new faces, they need to be comforted and given time. Let’s see what Burr Island have to say about it with English Roses. Beautiful picked acoustic guitar tones spill out from the intro. A duet of vocals breaks forward to design a melancholy nostalgia in lyrical form. Silken tones harmonise over the story about the past. The tale turns to the sharing of time with a neighbour who only grows English Roses. Refusing to see the beauty in the other breeds, the neighbour is filled with hate. A statement about the moral stance of being welcoming to other cultures, sometimes the weeds in our garden are what the natural economy is begging for. Burr Island
Nunney Town Devon As the folk-inspired duo tour the nation in support of Tunde Baiyewu and Ocean Colour Scene across a run of dates this summer, the band release their second single Nunney Town. In collaboration with the folk music luminary John McCusker, a new edge is given form with passionate harmonium and touching violin. Having worked hard on their sound and established themselves as a proficient and reliable group, the band found themselves with a live agent, a PR deal, and a great team who all want to see them succeed. Melodic acoustic guitar and twin vocal harmony rolls in like a early morning mist. An upbeat rhythm and an evocative melody launch the mood into whirling steps. Banjo and violin lean forward, they add distinctive colours that decorate the chords and bring out the tone of the composition. A journey of progressive rock style simmering down ensues as the meaning of the song is given time to sink in. As it closes, the chorus is given one last run around the field before it’s time to go inside. You can visit the Burr Island website You can follow Burr Island on Facebook and Instagram
