This veteran of the electronic music scene is once more back in the headlines with a new release on Rejected. No stranger to the label, the Poker Flat boss is more than happy to show his face on likeminded productions. Hailing from Nienburg in Germany and now in Berlin, the producer has been an integral figure in the electronic music soundscape since 1991. A host of technology and styles have been unveiled since those early days and Steve Bug has sustained a traditional yet ever-evolving journey through this constantly changing topography. Grumble Bumble takes everything from the early days and makes it new via inventive beats and clever sound designs that lead on from their parent themes. Along with a B-side, Get Away From Me, which makes use of jazzy percussion and jumpstart chords, this release is Steve Bug’s premiere for the new year.
Resonant thumping bass drum strikes a unison beat with a repeating blip tone. New sonics enter to deliver new angles on the percussion. The drums enter as hats and shakers flow over the choppy surface. Bass begins to chew up the undercarriage with off-beat sinks into the depth. A wall of catchy rhythm opens out before us with various aspects and colours to admire. Dancing grooves spill from the beats as the one-two steps drive through picturesque arenas of synthesiser and shift. Familiar oscillator feels rise from the breaks as pulsing statues of flow stand tall in orderly lines. The six plus minutes track grows gracefully on many branches as differing elements bud then flourish on the vine of simple and effective electronic drums.

That Old Quiet Lighthouse
Featuring Sanja Cin
Described as putting the “emo back in wholesome”, a reversal of meaning might be involved somewhere. That Old Quiet Lighthouse have been climbing the ladder at super speed in the wake of their lively and lovable sound. Inspired by key acts such as Pinegrove and Alex G, That Old Quiet Lighthouse take their capable song writing to new levels of virtuosity. Laughter features the beautiful sonics of Sanja Cin and is designed to be an up-beat folk number that uses the melodious haunt of the tenor horn to bring out the magic in her voice. In just a few months, That Old Quiet Lighthouse has exploded into luminosity as their work has been featured on Charlie Ashcroft’s Amazing Radio andV13.
A melodious chugging rock progression opens with clear and well-projected vocals. A mix of various harmonies emerge from the mix of violin, guitar, and bass. Interesting drum beats slenderly fit in the spaces behind the rhythm. A fun and inventive vocal opens out in musical lanes. A funk and jazz feel leans in with the note choices. Sanja Cin offers harmony layers in the powerful lyric section as the song changes with gradual gear shifts. Melancholic words bob like happy ducks on feelings of just right that round off the emotion with balance and dignity.

Floating Above The Water (Live)
Magic Door Record Label
Dreamy and art inspired, New Jersey dream-pop figureheads Elk City bring a new video single made by H. Robert Escurel. Recorded live at Brooklyn’s Union Pool, the video brings a fresh outlook and another page in the chapter-turning adventures of the band. A new album is out, Above The Water LP contains all the recent singles, this feature track, and a lot more. Available on the Magic Door Record Label, this new production puts another key in the hands of the listeners to unlock some wholesome vision food. The group have inspirations ranging from PJ Harvey to 10,000 Maniacs, so we can expect a spectrum of quality that flows from these multiple sources. Formed by drummer Ray Ketchum and vocalist Renée LoBue, the band quickly gained a full line up. With Sean Eden from Luna and Chris Robertson from Feed (a Psychedelic Furs side-project) on the guitars, Richard Baluyut from Versus takes the bass. Elk City has been enjoying the twilight sounds of happy hour since the year 2000. This latest record is, however, a brand new era for the progressive and psychedelic band.
Waves on sonic togetherness range from side to side as the band enchant us with the first few bars. Guitar rises from the mists of sound with a slender drum score to make everything stable. The vocals begin, introspective and gothic tones curdle like shadows at dusk as the resonant band sound rises and falls like gusts of soul-clearing wind. Spellbinding disparity meets utopian sonic presence as the music drips from tilted dimensions into glistening cups held by eager magi. Elements of neo-folk bring a soulful edge as shining lights of tone speckle the Whitby jet backdrop with ever growing stella intensity.

Elegant Ride On
The first track on their new EP, Ducpetiauxlaan, Elegant Rise On is the opening sequence to the latest material from Brussels-based electronic music group Nervian Society. Describing themselves as mining for the best sonic gold in the depths of exploratory electro and disco sounds, this new outfit of producers have already established a long line of glistening thread. Following the braids from their latest release, we can trace the value back to several projects. Members of Nervian Society previously founded Brussels’ Spector Studio where they recorded several key artists including Que La Suite Soit Douce, The Cultural Studies, and Instructor. With a lifetime of experience playing varied and complimentary DJ sets that include a plethora of special guests, that same ethos of bringing everything together for the event has made Nervian Society something to be treasured.
A ringing synthesiser tone accompanies driving percussion to open the track. The rhythm sounds simmer down to silence as atmospheric pads kindle imagery and texture. Drums roll back into the mix with staggered layers as percussive tones begin to assist in the rhythmic outlay. Piano notes dance to the beat as bass begins to chew the funk in resonant researches. The synth tone evolves to a popping sound as vocals join the foray. The rise and fall of various elements in the music bring distinctive faces to the forefront that show their expressive drama in subtle reflections of tone.
