Optometry
Television Screen Palette Recordings Released just a few short days ago, the new In Visible Distance EP from Los Angeles duo Optometry refuels the firebox with a fancy run of remixes, an original, and a cover. The recently published debut album saw the electronic music pairing rocket into the atmosphere, and their orbit has surely been established. To prove it, the remix meat of this new record shows off the talents of some of the genres most sought-after and celebrated acts. Alongside the newly written Television Screen, the EP contains the deep cut Make Up from Vanity 6. Finding the lesser-known beauties within an artist’s body of work and bringing them to the front sometimes requires a heavy figurehead. That’s why we see names like Plaid, Silent Servant, and Alighted making a name for themselves in this newly opened fanbase. A subtle wandering bass melody opens the tune with effervescent meanderings into the rhythm. A deep bass kick enters along with a graceful female voice with a flowing song. The bass continues to thump with the drum and gradual progressions. As the song continues, additions of layer and harmony add novel colourings and beat patterns to the laid-back and sensual mix. A verse and chorus with interludes structure gives the electronic music a modern and popular feel that bridges the gap between dance and drama. Suburban Spell
Natural Science Melbourne Alongside the release of the already acclaimed Falling Down EP, Melbourne’s very own Suburban Spell issues the video for Natural Science. The solo work of Peter Endall, an electronic rhythm-fest awaits in the guise of classic acts such as Ultravox, Gary Numan, New Order, and Visage. Formerly of Schizo Scherzo, the veteran soundsmith has been surfing the new wave since its very beginning. Maybe the crest is new, maybe the water has receded a thousand times, but a classic is always a classic and with modern sensibilities running the show, good music always stays fresh. The video, made by Dingo Cross Films, was directed and produced by Cassie Dart and Paul Puccio. A grabby snare-driven beat opens out with chunky bass synth sounds to fill the flow. A vocal begins, robotic elements chant the lines in format as the music bumps along on the catchy rhythm. Melodic drips on the keyboard add new levels of dance and sense to the pulsating story. The words draw on images of strange and true with equal imagination as the electronic sounds glisten and warp under the human pressure of feeling. A marching beat continues to plunge through the up and down waves of music as new and various tones escape the mix to celebrate their individuality. Lusitanian Ghosts
Shameless Portugal Canada Sweden The latest sneaky peek at the forthcoming Lusitanian Ghosts III LP, which is due to be released soon, the band of the same name provide us with Shameless. A track about love, regret, and reconciliation, the neo-folk collective makes use of traditional string instruments including the endangered Portuguese chordophone, which needs to be repopularised. Since the release of Long Train, the first single off the new record, a run of positive attention has been ascending through social and media alike. Psychology says we each feel mixtures of guilt, shame, and nothing, and our internal messages are there for a reason - but sometimes the wires get crossed. As long as it’s not 0-0-0, we could all do with a bit of Shameless in our lives. It bursts open like a morning flower that scatters aromatic pollens into the garden. New vibes jingle on steel-string acoustics with a thundering bass beneath. Punchy and passionate vocal lines run laps on the circuit as the bars jostle in their happy-go-lucky bounce. The song reaches in and delivers not only a catchy rhythm but a deep and meaningful subject that we can muse on if we have the time. For the middle-eight, or maybe a bit longer and at the end, we get the slightly unfamiliar tones of a soaring guitar-pedalled thing that whooshes us up into the next track. Beau Jennings And The Tigers
People In This Town Black Mesa Records Indie AM Radio style rock n roll from the American tradition brings Beau Jennings and The Tigers to their latest single. Following from last year’s Heavy Light album, this latest track pushes back the wilderness for one more stride forward. Based on a small suburban bar in Norman, Oklahoma, the music addresses the sometimes taken for granted and overlooked lives that are just as important as anyone else’s. In a place where sports, religion, and a tough attitude makes people who they are, understanding the ropes can help us to understand the reasons and the causes of the issues of the day. He’s just 42, which is 6 months older than me, and this style of music brings a mature and wiser than years sense to the scene with deep reflectivity on social life. Crackles of static and warming up sounds raise the spirit of the song and it stands up with a jolt. Keyboards, bass, drums, and guitar add a ingle that leads into a vocal and drum focus. As the first verse progresses, the band revs up once more to bring the melody and harmony with surges of major key. A one-two drum beat makes a foot-tapping feel take hold as the rock n roll vocal melody rises with breezy motifs. The music gathers pace with each new pass and as we collect the gains the chorus becomes a set-piece for crowd participation. Clapping, singing along, and bobbing up and down can all be found in this jolly and classic rock style little number.
