This third album takes the rock psychedelia to new levels with mixing undertaken by Spooky Electric Co’s Jeremy Sherrer and mastering by Dave Coley at Elysian. Featuring Dark Horses’ Lisa Elle, Next Of Kin takes the position of video single and portrays a sense of progress in times of uncertainty. Enchanting melodies waft up from the dreamy intro, guitars and drums emerging from the chrysalis of sound. Bass forms a solid ground for heady drums and meandering piano to flow in spacious verse sections. Lisa Elle sings with her angelic voice quality that rises and falls with the tune as the song reaches ever further outward. Ambient guitar motifs ring out between the words as harmonising phrases elevate and compliment the sound of the vocal. Bad Addiction From Change Of Scene Their new album is out in just a couple of days and making way for the big release is the latest video single. Bad Addiction sees americana and classic rock work together in a well-written and intriguing burst of brilliance. If you like music like The Black Crowes, Butch Walker, or Blitzen Trapper, then The Matinee will be more than suitable for your playlist. Mixing organic drumming with mixing and various drum trigger technology, Khompa has knitted a rhythmic and rain resistant fabric of sound that has its own unique style. His work has been featured in Modern Drummer and Ableton Live for its universal inspiration. As drums become triggers, the technology can link the sound to a switch for an array of digital instruments including synthesisers, samplers, and studio effects. Quite an achievement and one which requires an inept skill as well as lengthy practice sessions, mastering the capabilities of these devices is something to be admired. Devoid of some of the usual elements we may expect in electronic music, the beats and studio-frill take a step back to allow the glory of music to shine through pure tone and harmony. In the apt use of various sound qualities, created by tweaking the individual processes that make the output, Miguel Gil Tertre embarks on a dreamy and ground-breaking journey into the boundaries of this classic instrument. A dual tone of eerie depth spans out in a graceful melody. Another layer of twinkling clarity envelopes the sound with a moving cosmic dance. A spiralling display of slow motion fireworks carries the imagination outward in streams as the sounds reveal escapist realities within spaces reserved for the inner eye.
