The Mystery Plan
What A Day
10mm Omega Records
With a three-track EP that highlights the forthcoming full-length album, What A Day takes the title track of this current selection and displays just enough colours to make us want so much more. The Mystery Plan have produced thirteen major productions including seven studio albums. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, it all began when Jason Herring teamed up with Paul Jensen of Fetchin’ Bones and the Interstellars. A full band crystalised around this initial formula, including Jason’s wife Amy, Otis Hughes, Patty McLaughlin Thomas, and Jefferson Chester. The band have previously worked with the legendary John Fryer of This Mortal Coil and Black Needle Noise. Just like other great artists such as Love and Rockets, Nine Inch Nails, Swans, and Yaz, The Mystery Plan have enjoyed his masterful production skills from which they undoubtedly picked up a few techniques. This latest album, Haunted Organic Machines, has been produced by Jason Herring himself with the help of Rob Tavaglione. This lead single, What A Day, was written just after the pandemic and wanted to express everything that had been pent up inside.
Digital and warm sonics begin to chant a melodic mantra that’s greeted by up-beat and sensitive drumming. Pad synths sweep across the soundsphere in waves of glistening tranquillity. The vocals begin, a poetic and melancholy aspect manifests within the stylised excitement that shines in the composition. Drums flurry in fast-paced breaks as the pulsing and evolving music draws in ever closer with each bar. A pipe instrument starts to sing like a tropical bird in the flow of sound to bring the song to a natural end.
