Tzusing
偶像包袱 (Idol Baggage) From 绿帽 GREEN HAT A true student of international culture, Tzusing has grown up in Singapore, China, Taiwan, and the USA. Finally landing in China for a job, Tzusing simultaneously began DJing at one of Shanghai’s premiere slots, The Shelter. During this time, Tzusing refined his sound and his skills with lots of performances and home sessions figuring out the technology further. This led on to Tzusing releasing a run of 12” releases on the L.I.E.S. label with a heavy EBM influence on each. He didn’t stop there; the next step was naturally a debut record. This landed in 2017 and was inspired by the fantasy story of The Smiling, Proud Wanderer by Jin Yong. This new record, Green Hat, has been designed around the legend of the Green Hat in Chinese folklore. A symbol of infidelity, a two-timing wife gave her husband a green hat to wear when he left town as a sign to her lover to visit. When she was caught, the green hat symbol became a sign of broken trust. Taken from the album, which is out at the end of March, Idol Baggage is a taster of the whole pudding to keep us extra patient. A breath and a buzz launch the music into action with rhythmic sonics that blend into swerving bass and rattling drums. Distant synths move closer in quick strings as robotic clamours add spirals of percussion with oriental sounds. A barrage of rhythms ensues with tangents and harmonies rising from the swelling mass of sound. A manic yet structured paradox moves forward with semi-repetitive patterns and odd sounds that leap from the whole. Fascinating and exciting, Idol Baggage from Tzusing thrashes about in musical bliss to its own inner energy. FR3SH TrX
Shine Germany FR3Sh TrX, pronounced Fresh Tracks, is the project of KHB Music head, producer, and guitarist Sven Hessel. With a run of successes behind them already, FR3SH TrX is making massive headway along the road to legendary status. With a serious amount of radio play for previous work and plenty more on the way with Shine, the electronic and memorable dance and house compositions stick around. A soundtrack for social life, late nights, and motivated daytimes, Shine is another silver bullet in the melee against mediocracy. Silky synthesiser dreams out from the sides as a pulsing rhythm kicks with snap-snare and thumping bass. Soulful lyrics wander over, story-telling and romance merges with a soliloquy style counting of blessings. The chorus hits with a new layer of gated synth that pulses with harmonious melody. Funky chords jig with the catchy beats as the open-road sound corners gracefully between various hills and monuments metaphorically depicted in the words. Pennies By The Pound
Whispers Beneath The Willow Tree Finland Finland’s Pennies By The Pound are preparing to release their Nothingside LP at the end of March. This new song is the second single from this record and highlights another edge to their well-rounded and inventive sound. Mastered by Mark Gardener from Ride at Oxford’s OX4 Sound, and produced by multiple number-one hit maker Rauli “Rake” Eskolin, Whispers Beneath The Willow Tree stands to conjure the magic of Finnish imagery with its title alone. A middle-ground song due to be set between more punchy output, the psychedelic prog-rockers show off their tender and sentimental side with this traditional kind of romance. Synth strings crawl from the shade into flute and pipe rays of sunshine. Guitar joins the flood, rising melodies strike beautiful walls of sound that rise into song. As the second guitar breaks, vocals enter on wings of melancholy and charm. Meaningful words smoothly link to one another in a melody of dreamy introspection. As the guitar kisses the drum, bass continues to plunge the motive and rhythm through the meandering music. Hook-laden choruses snap us to the centre as a progressive evolution maintains an ever-growing sense of passion. Erin K
Keep Her London Taken from the awaited new album, Sink To Swim, Erin K releases her video single Keep Her. Billed as a soundtrack to Generation Y and a modern foul-mouthed princess, the anti-hero quality of her persona is matched by her striking good looks and artist’s poise. Recorded at Squarehead Studios in Kent, the American born London resident is making the most of Europe’s music scene with eager microcultures everywhere. A personal and harsh style brings her own brand of evoc-pop indie to the forefront with a massive 3 million streams already gathered. Since the collaborative sensation I Need Sound that launched in 2019, Erin K has been dutifully writing and performing to make sure this new material gets her into orbit. It’s a pleasure for Sound Read Six to offer a little boost. Pretty acoustic guitar opens with a slightly Spanish sounding theme. A snappy drum score enters on a quick pace to keep time with the individually plucked chord notes. Erin K brings her lush and flowing voice, smothering the skeleton of sound with flesh and soul, the words enchant with a comfortable sense of story and intrigue. A bitter-sweet energy drips from the writing, a human story of mixed emotions, strange behaviour, and mixed signals makes us think deeply while enjoying the song. Pelican Rocket
Stank Sweden Unifying the great sound of roots and western music with their own brand of Swedish blues, Pelican Rocket brings the melodious and country-inspired Stank. Pelican Rocket is more of a community than a band, with people from all corners making their appearances and contributions as time goes by. It’s an exciting time for this fresh blues outfit, with their debut single recently released to the global scene. Comprised of four key musicians with plenty of experience, and a long list of family and friends who make it happen, it’s a momentous time for Pelican Rocket and only the beginning of something long-lived indeed. Harmonica and reverb saunters into the tavern as guitars and drums perk up and pay attention. As the music takes a hold, the percussion offers a rock n roll rhythm as guitars twang and buzz on progressive chord manoeuvres. Vocals enter, strong and punchy vocals with pitch-perfect power smash through the double swing doors and walks confidently to the centre of the stage. The band groove to the energy offered by the lyrics, heavy metal elements hit punk and country vibes in a triangle of quality sound. You can follow Pelican Rocket on Instagram |
