Suburban Spell
Bright Gold Cross Melbourne The first new single from the forthcoming Falling Down EP, Bright Gold Cross takes Australia’s synth-wave synonymy to our ears with all the trimmings. An album about giving in to guilty pleasures and neglecting the consequences, the single is accompanied by a video made by Dingo Cross Films. An outback sense perhaps a necessary metaphor for the ultimate destination that bad choices lead to. The solo project of Schizo Scherzo’s Pete Endall, his previous band enjoyed a marathon of success in the 80s, working alongside Fergal Sharky, Real Life, Pseudo Echo, and The Eurythmics in the process. A cymbal breaks open the sound as synth voices begin to sing with choral harmonies. A dappled sense of tone ensues as various layers snake and slide into place. Rhythm with strict drumming keeps a quick-paced time that feels like running or a pumping heart. Inventive melodies rise from the vocals as effects and digital sounds merge with the human voice. Digital bass and treble sounds playfully jostle for space in the rising energy of music. A spiralling form of compositional uplift creates a continual surge of forward motion as the chorus flows from the verses in merry and memorable patterns. pMad
Fire County Galway With a brand-new album I In Power and its radiant single, Ireland’s gothic rock showman pMad returns to Sound Read Six. It’s not that long since he released Down, and since February his following has increased significantly. Several media platforms have followed suit and made some space for this brilliantly talented and charismatic creator of classic modernity. Influences ranging from The Smiths, The Sisters Of Mercy, and Suicidal Tendencies bring a patchwork of new-wave and avant-garde expressivity to pMad’s work. A knack for dynamic rhythms and theatrical song writing makes pMad catchy like Fire. Sinister bass begins to reel out a pulsing rhythm that shifts into vocal. pMad starts the song, a gloomy delivery greets motivating guitar sounds and uplifting breaks. Melody drapes across the frame in a loose and silky flow, key sentences layered in a tone-shifting effect. A swirl of underground musicality forms unique drifts that lift the track in novel ways as the rhythm maintains an exciting sense of anticipation. Page-turning bars link with dynamic synthesiser and poetic expression to unleash an electronic and industrial mainstay. You can follow pMad on Facebook and TikTok
Half Cut
Noise (Cromby Remix) Homage Records Brooklyn-based electronic music fountainhead Homage records are here with their 21st release. Taking the reins on this lucky number is Half Cut. Hailing from Sydney, this transpacific producer is proudly exhibiting a series of seven tracks that transcend the electronic scene with new ideas. The feature is this Cromby Remix, which once again lets the lines draw themselves that little bit further. A focus of talent with a solid base that stands tall on terrafirma highlights this classic-already EP. A wandering warp of retro acid technology meets modern formulae and astounding studio choices to add this extra cherry on the top of this homage to modern music. A classic house-style bass begins to pound with a subtle crackled motion. Hats join the percussion layer in a chunky line of pulsations. Snare begins to rattle in a silky fluid motion as the music readies itself for more bass. A vocal sample signifies the end of the intro as pouncing synthesiser melody reveals a harmonisation with the punchy bassline. Twanging sonics merge with abstract sonic swirls that form strange and misty coalescences in the flow. Snappy and kinetic bars snake and slide in a continual motion of dramatic and artistic rhythm. Mixing layers shift and adapt under various pressured gravities with the flow of twisting textures and foundations. You can follow Homage Records on Facebook Half Cut is on Soundcloud and Instagram |
